Junior pitcher/outfielder Taylor Harcum (Hebron, Md./Mardela) has been named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week for softball for the week of April 24-30. This is the second straight week Harcum has garnered the player of the week award.
Harcum hit .857 (6-for-7) with three runs scored and four RBI as the Shorewomen swept Franklin & Marshall, 6-2 and 10-1, on Saturday. She drove in a career-high four runs in the nightcap that allowed Washington to remain alive for the top seed in the Conference playoffs. The Shorewomen ended up earning the two seed and will travel to top seed McDaniel for the conference tournament this weekend.
This is the fifth time this season she has won one of the two weekly conference awards in softball, with her first three being the conference's pitcher of the week which she earned on March 6, April 3 and April 17. She has been the recipient of either the pitcher or player of the week four times in the past five weeks. The junior has won all five of her weekly awards this season.
After finishing the season in top form, Ursinus College junior Kaitlyn Willis was named the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Willis was all but unhittable in stretching her conference-leading win total to 14 with three consecutive complete-game masterpieces. The right-hander finished the week 3-0 with a microscopic 0.67 ERA, allowing just ten hits and two earned runs in 21.0 innings; she struck out 19 batters and walked only two.
Willis started the week by allowing three hits and one run with eight strikeouts in a 3-1 victory at Delaware Valley on Thursday, then followed that up with two gems in a doubleheader sweep at Dickinson as the Bears extended their season-ending winning streak to four. Willis conceded one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in the opener, then twirled a three-hit shutout and added an RBI double at the plate to help Ursinus complete the sweep with a 5-0 win.
At the conclusion of the regular season, Willis ranked first in the CC in wins (14), second in innings (145.1), and fifth in complete games (15) and strikeouts (89). For her career, Willis is 30-22 with a 2.61 ERA and 225 strikeouts in 322.1 innings pitched.
