The Centennial Conference Volleyball teams and The Tanner’s Touch Foundation, a non-profit organization based out of Carroll County, MD, have joined together to raise money for pediatric cancer. During the month of October, the 11 volleyball teams in the Centennial Conference will campaign to raise awareness and funds for this great cause!
The Tanner’s Touch Foundation was founded in honor of Tanner Yingling. Tanner was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer when he was just 3 yrs old. He endured 42 weeks of chemo, 26 radiation treatments and multiple surgeries. Tanner recently had scans showing that he is now 3 years and 7 months in remission. This foundation raises money for pediatric cancer research at Johns Hopkins Hospital and also for families of children with cancer to offset the cost of medical treatment.
Each school will be collecting donations and pledges from friends, families, and team supporters for each dig the team records in a pre-selected match. A dig is a defensive play where a player prevents an opponent's attack from scoring by "digging" the ball before it hits the ground. Pledges and donations will then be collected in the first week of November. The players will also be wearing gold shoe laces and special t-shirts to show their support for this cause.
During the last 3 years, the Centennial Conference volleyball teams have raised over $23,000 for The Tanners Touch Foundation. Prior to 2011, the 11 teams raised funds for Breast Cancer Research totaling over $40,000 that was donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer!
The donations will be collected by the end of October and the total amount raised by the 11 schools will be announced at the Centennial Conference Volleyball Championships on November 8-9, 2014. Please contact the head coach of your favorite Centennial volleyball team to make a pledge or donation. Thank you for joining us in the fight against pediatric cancer, THE CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE CARES!
