All-CC Field Hockey: Ursinus Collects Trio of Major Awards

UC duo of Franz, Montgomery named Players of the Year

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Ursinus' Mary Lauren Franz, Maeve Montgomery and the Bears coaching staff grabbed major awards along with Swarthmore's Kayla Fink to headline the 2024 All-Centennial Field Hockey team.

Franz, a senior forward for the Bears, was named Offensive Player of the Year. Franz leads the conference in points per game (2.18) with 37 total points, 16 goals and five assists on the year. Four of her goals have been of the game-winning variety. Franz is the first Bear to win Offensive Player of the Year honors since the conference split the Player of the Year into Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in 2017.

Montgomery, a senior defender for Ursinus, was selected as Defensive Player of the Year. She leads the CC with six defensive saves and anchored a defense that allowed 1.37 goals per game. Montgomery is the first Bears to win Defensive Player of the Year accolades. In total, the honors for Franz and Montgomery mark the 11th and 12th time in CC history that an Ursinus player secured Player of the Year recognition, and the first since 2015.

The Ursinus coaching staff was selected by its peers as Coaching Staff of the Year. Head coach Janelle Benner and assistants Danielle Neal, Addie Plummer, Heather Long, Ashley Johnston and Aliki Torrence helped guide the Bears to second-place finish in both the CC regular season and postseason and an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.

A freshman midfielder, Swarthmore's Fink was tabbed as the conference's Rookie of the Year in addition to being a seecond team All-Centennial honoree. Fink started all 20 games for the Garnet, recording two assists on the year. Fink is the first Swarthmore player to win Rookie of the Year in the 12-year history of the award.

Sixteen players landed on the All-Centennial team for at least the second time in their careers, including a trio of three-time honorees. Bryn Mawr senior midfielder Eva Yacura earned all-star accolades for the third straight season, grabbing second team laurels this fall after earning first team honors each of the past two seasons. Washington College senior forward Kat Esposito collected first team honors for the second time in her career (also in 2022) and was also a second team pick back in 2021. Bryn Mawr senior midfielder Reba Ervin secured first team recognition for the first time after earning second team honors in 2022 and 2023.

Johns Hopkins has 55 first-team All-Centennial selections in the 32-year history of the conference. Ursinus is next with 51, followed by Franklin & Marshall (49), Gettysburg (48), Washington College (35), Swarthmore (25), Dickinson (20), Muhlenberg (19), McDaniel (17), Haverford (16) and Bryn Mawr (12).
