Blue Jays Advance to Regional Final; Diplomats Ousted by MIT

Johns Hopkins advanced to the regional finals for the sixth straight year while Franklin & Marshall saw its season come to a close in the second round of the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament on Friday night. 

In Baltimore, Md., sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins punched its ticket to a sixth consecutive Sweet 16 on Friday evening, defeating William Smith, 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-13), inside Goldfarb Gymnasium. With the victory, the Blue Jays advance to Saturday's Regional Championship, where they will face La Verne for a berth in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
 
Defensively, Nicole Tuszynski anchored the back row with a team-high 16 digs. At the net, Michela De Marzi turned in a historic performance with 11 total blocks—the most in program history in an NCAA Tournament match—while Helena Swaak (5) and Simone Adam (4) combined for nine more to help produce a dominant blocking effort. Offensively, Adam led the Blue Jays with 12 kills.
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 22, for the NCAA Regional Championship against La Verne. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gymnasium.

In Cambridge, Mass., F&M's (23-7) NCAA Tournament run came to a close, as the Diplomats fell in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 19-25) to No. 9 MIT (29-3, 11-0 NEWMAC) in the Second Round on Friday evening.

Coco Shultz registered nine kills and nine digs, tying for the team lead in both categories, while Melissa Benkowitz recorded nine kills and two aces with four digs. Liah Perez totaled 15 assists, while Carly Campbell had 12 assists with two aces and eight digs, tying for the most digs for the Diplomats. Ceci Connolly recorded seven kills with three block assists, while Avery Grantham totaled one solo block, two block assists, and four kills. Mya Anderson hit .600 with three kills and two block assists.
