SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Marian Ware Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation
Brad Koch announced this morning that
Landry Kosmalski has stepped down from his role at the college. The winningest coach in program history has accepted a position to become the associate head men's basketball coach at Campbell University.
"For over a decade, Landry has represented Swarthmore College with integrity, purpose, and professionalism," said Koch. "His leadership style, vast knowledge of the game, and success with recruiting has positioned men's basketball as one of the top teams in the country.
While the accolades and accomplishments are remarkable, it is his impact on our student-athletes and our community that is beyond laudable. He has led our student-athletes with grace, vision, and resilience, helping them grow immensely, both on and off the court.
I am excited for Landry and his family for this new opportunity at Campbell and know he will provide a similar imprint on student lives and the game of basketball to all who support that program."
A two-time National Coach of the Year, Kosmalski led the most successful era in Swarthmore men's basketball history, posting a 241-102 record (.703) over 13 seasons as head coach. Under his leadership, the Garnet won four Centennial Conference Championships and made seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2016 to 2024. During this historic run, Swarthmore earned two NCAA Final Four berths and a national runner-up finish in 2019. The Garnet also finished the 2020 pandemic-shortened tournament as the No. 1 team in the nation and went unbeaten through their regular season schedule.
Heading into this season, Swarthmore had the fifth highest winning percentage in the country across all divisions over the past eight seasons. In that time, the Garnet won over 82-percent of their games, cementing the program as one of the best in Division-III.
"I am incredibly grateful to Swarthmore College and the surrounding community for its support of me, my family, and our team over the last 13 years," said Kosmalski. "We had an amazing run as a program, and my family and I had an equally amazing experience as members of this special community. I would like to say a special thanks to all of the administrators, staff members, my coaching peers and friends, and the assistant coaches who have dedicatedly served on our staff the last 13 years. Lastly, I am forever thankful to our players for teaching me so many valuable lessons, showing me grace, and - to put it plainly - tolerating me on a daily basis. I know that the culture we have built will live on and I will be watching every step of the way."
Kosmalski arrived at Swarthmore in 2012, inheriting a team that had finished 3-22 during the previous season. The former Davidson College standout quickly turned the program around, improving the team's record each year and achieving its first 20-win season in just his fourth year. In 2017, the Garnet won their first of four Centennial Conference Championships, marking the program's first conference title since 1951. This success led to a remarkable seven-year stretch of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a National Championship appearance, two Final Four berths, three Elite Eight runs, and an impressive 16-6 record in the tournament.
In his final season with the Garnet, Kosmalski guided a young team to a 17-9 record, including a 9-4 mark in conference play. The Garnet made their ninth-consecutive appearance in the Centennial Tournament, reaching the championship game in eight of those seasons.
