BALTIMORE, MD –
Matt Troy, who recently completed his eighth season as the head volleyball coach at Johns Hopkins, announced today that he is leaving Homewood to become the head coach at Division I Elon University. Troy served two stints as the Blue Jay head coach from 2010-12 and from 2019-24.
Troy guided the Blue Jays to a remarkable eight-season record of 224-38 (.855) with seven Centennial Conference titles, seven trips to the NCAA Tournament, one national championship (2019), one NCAA Semifinal appearance (2024) and two other trips to the Elite Eight (2022, 2023).
"I want to thank Director of Athletics Jennifer Baker, the entire Johns Hopkins athletics family, my assistant coaches,
Sydney Portale and
Steve Malvaso, and all those I had the honor and absolute pleasure of coaching over the years," Troy stated. "Hopkins will always hold a special place in my heart and my family's—not because of the program's growth and success, but because of the people who make this place so special. I am forever grateful for the years I spent at Hopkins and will always cherish the memories we created. Go Hop!"
Returning to Homewood in 2019, Troy promptly guided the Blue Jays to a perfect 35-0 record and the program's first national championship. In the process, the Blue Jays became, at the time, the first Division III Women's Volleyball team since 1999 to go unbeaten and win the national championship; it also marked just the third time in Division III history at the time that a team completed an undefeated national championship season.
After the COVID pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, Troy and the Blue Jays picked up right where they left off in 2021 by winning their first 31 matches to set a then Division III record with a 66-match winning streak before falling in the Sweet 16. Johns Hopkins followed that 2021 season with back-to-back runs to the Elite Eight in 2022 and 2023 before advancing to the NCAA Semifinals this season. The Blue Jays posted a 33-3 record and finished the 2024 season ranked fourth in the nation by the AVCA.
Troy arrived at Johns Hopkins in 2010 and guided the Blue Jays to a 19-12 record. That set the stage for a two-year run that saw Hopkins go 25-5 in 2011 and 29-4 in 2012. The Blue Jays won the first two Centennial Conference titles in program history in those years and made the first two appearances in the NCAA Tournament in those seasons as well.
Troy was named the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2019 and he and his assistant coaches were named the Staff of the Year by the Centennial in 2024. He was also named the AVCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2019 and 2021.
In his eight seasons as Homewood, Troy coached 14 AVCA All-Americans, seven CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and five Centennial Conference Players of the Year. Thirty times a Troy-coached player earned All-Centennial honors and 18 times one of his players grabbed AVCA All-Region honors.
Troy left Johns Hopkins for Mary Washington after the 2012 season. He spent six seasons as head coach there and guided the Eagles to a 133-58 record with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Coupled with his time at Johns Hopkins, Troy sports a 14-year record of 357-96 (.788).
