LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall head football coach
Tom Blumenauer has announced that he has resigned his position to accept the same role at SUNY Cortland. Blumenauer recently concluded his third season as the Diplomats' head coach in the fall of 2024 and won 21 games over his three seasons leading Franklin & Marshall.
"Coach Blumenauer brought his high-energy leadership to our F&M program three years ago and quickly developed many deep relationships with our students, our families, the athletics department, alumni and the college community," said Director of Athletics and Recreation
Lauren Packer Webster. "He and his coaching staff have positioned F&M football on a strong upward trajectory and we look forward to continuing the Diplomat tradition of excellence."
The Diplomats closed the 2024 season with their second consecutive Centennial-MAC Bowl Series victory following a 7-0 win against Delaware Valley. That postseason win came just one year after F&M defeated King's (Pa.) in the bowl series to finish an 8-3 campaign which was the winningest season under Blumenauer. Blumenauer concludes his tenure with the Diplomats with a record of 21-11, including an 11-8 record in Centennial Conference games.
Franklin & Marshall had two student-athletes earn All-America honors under Blumenauer's guidance, marking the program's first such players to accomplish that milestone in nine seasons. Justin Gerhart '24 was Blumenauer's first All-American as head coach when he led all of Division III in interceptions during the 2022 season. Just one year later,
Laurence Miller '26 earned All-America recognition as a place kicker. In total, the Diplomats had 25 All-Centennial Conference performers during the past three seasons. Also excelling in the classroom, 62 scholar-athletes were named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll under Blumenauer's tutelage.
Prior to becoming the head football coach at Franklin & Marshall, Blumenauer had previously worked as an assistant coach at Williams, Bowdoin, Endicott, and St. Lawrence.
A nationwide search will be undertaken to find the next head coach of the prestigious Franklin & Marshall football team. The Diplomats will be entering their 139th season as a varsity program in the fall of 2025 and rank among the top 10 Division III teams with 668 victories since the program's inception.
