Hopkins Chosen to Repeat in CC Field Hockey

LANCASTER, Pa. – Six-time defending champion Johns Hopkins has secured the distinction as preseason favorite in the 2025 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Preseason Poll. The Blue Jays received all 10 possible first-place votes and 100 points to once again sit atop a vote of the conference head coaches.

Swarthmore garnered the other first-place nod and tallied 86 points to take second place in the poll. 2024 CC runner-up Ursinus was picked third with 79 points, while Franklin & Marshall (71), Bryn Mawr (70) and Gettysburg (53) were also projected as playoff teams in fourth through sixth place, respectively.

The 2024 campaign was a historic one for the Centennial, as three teams qualified for the NCAA postseason for the first time in conference history. The CC had previously sent two teams a total of 11 times throughout its storied field hockey history, but had never broken through with three bids until last fall. One of those bids went to Bryn Mawr, which competed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

The Owls went on to win their first round matchup at home against SUNY Geneseo before falling to eventual national champion Middlebury in round two. CC champion Johns Hopkins and runner-up Ursinus also competed in NCAAs, with the Bears falling to Rowan in the opening round and the Blue Jays advancing to the quarterfinal round before also being knocked out by Middlebury. It marked the fourth straight season that Hopkins saw its season ended by the Panthers, with the previous three matchups occurring in the national title game.

With a seven-year national title streak still intact, the question still remains as to when someone will put an end to Middlebury's incredible run. The question of who will accomplish that feat is also unknown, but the top teams in the Centennial are perhaps more well-positioned to do so than any other conference in the country. One All-American, nine All-Region performers and 20 All-Centennial picks from 10 different teams return to the CC this fall, showcasing the deep and widespread talent throughout the conference.

Ursinus remains the all-time leader with 12 CC titles, followed by Johns Hopkins (10), Gettysburg (5), Swarthmore (3), Franklin & Marshall (2), McDaniel (1), and Washington College (1). Nine different teams have qualified for the CC postseason over the past five seasons, another example of the parity and depth of talent that persists throughout CC field hockey.

Hopkins midfielder Jenna Halpin is back as the lone returning All-American after earning third team accolades from the NFHCA last fall. Eight players with multiple All-Centennial awards to their names also return this season - Halpin, Bryn Mawr's Maggie Barilla, F&M's Meghan Dole and Kat Thistlewaite, McDaniel's Reagan Cushman, Muhlenberg's Erin DeSandro, Ursinus' Marie Brainard and Washington College's MaryCate Anson

The NFHCA preseason poll will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 26, with the Centennial expected to be well-represented once again in the national rankings.
