Athletes of the Week: Sept. 4-10

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The first full week of the fall 2023 season is now in the books as Centennial Conference awards have been announced for the week of Sept. 4-10 in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Liam Johnston, So., Ursinus 
Raleigh, N.C. | Research Triangle
Johnston finished fifth at the LVC Invitational on Saturday, helping the Bears to a second-place team finish. In a field of 153 runners, Johnston crossed the 8k course in 26:18.0 to place fifth overall and third among Division III runners. Johnston helped the Bears take second in the 19-team event with teams from DI, DII and DIII, finishing behind only Seton Hall.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Bailey Mullen, Gr., McDaniel 
Baltimore, Md. | The Catholic High School of Baltimore 
Mullen finished 31st in a field of 93 runners to pace McDaniel at the Navy Invitational. Mullen crossed the finish line of the 6k course in 24:03.9 to set a new course record for the Green Terror. She was the second Division III finisher in a field consisting primarily of Division I competitio

Offensive Player of the Week
Mary Lauren Franz, Jr., F, Ursinus

Havertown, Pa. | Sacred Heart Academy
Franz led the Bears to their second consecutive ranked victory behind two goals in a 3-1 decision over No. 23 Lynchburg on Saturday afternoon. Knotted at 1-1 in the second half, Franz tallied the game-winning score in the third period and added an insurance goal in the fourth to seal the win for the Bears. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Charlene Basque, So., GK, Bryn Mawr 
West Newbury, Mass. | Pentucket Regional
Basque totaled 12 saves and a .909 save percentage in a 2-0 week for the Owls. She opened the week with a two-save shutout against Alvernia before recording 10 saves in a 2-1 double overtime win vs. Mary Washington. Basque leads the Centennial in goals against average (.312) and save percentage (.923) so far this season and boasts a 3-0 record between the pipes.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Ethan Jarden, So., F, Dickinson 
West Chester, Pa. | Henderson
Jarden scored three times in a 2-0 week for Dickinson. He opened the week with one goal in a 5-0 win over Penn State Brandywine before scoring twice in a 3-1 win against Rosemont. Against Rosemont, Jarden tallied the game-tying goal in the 48th minute and later capped the win for the Red and White with another goal in the 72nd minute. Over the two games he was a key cog in helping the Dickinson attack to outshoot the opposition 47-13 (18-2 on target). 

Defensive Player of the Week
Isaac Mintz, Jr., D, Franklin & Marshall 
Rye Brook, N.Y. | Blind Brook 
Mintz helped the Diplomats to a 2-0 week that included wins over Lebanon Valley and Elizabethtown. Mintz and the F&M defense limited its two opponents to seven total shots on goal and shut out Elizabethtown, 1-0, to claim the Smith-Herr Boot in the annual matchup between the local rivals. Mintz also rocketed a shot into the top-left corner of the net to give F&M an early advantage in the win over Lebanon Valley.

Offensive Player of the Week

Keira Prince, Jr., F, Haverford 
Middletown, N.J. | Middletown 
Prince logged four goals and two assists as the Fords went 2-0 last week. At home against Alvernia on Wednesday, Prince assisted on Sophia Miranda's game-winner, and then added an insurance goal of her own in the 43rd minute. On Saturday against DeSales, she posted a hat trick in a 6-1 rout at DeSales, including two scores in the opening 10 minutes of action. She also added an assist in the second half to cap an outstanding week. Prince is currently tied for the CC lead in goals (4) and is the CC leader in points (10). 

Defensive Player of the Week
Sara Pecorelli, Jr., GK, Muhlenberg 
Washington, D.C. | Sidwell Friends School
Pecorelli recorded 12 saves without allowing a goal in back-to-back scoreless ties for the Mules. She stopped seven shots against Moravian and five vs. Catholic.

VOLLEYBALL

Offensive Player of the Week

Simrin Carlsen, Jr., OH, Johns Hopkins 
Edison, N.J. | J.P. Stevens 
Carlsen did it all for Johns Hopkins in a weekend in which the team went 2-1, including a 3-1 win over No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The junior paced the Blue Jays in kills (53) and digs (35) on the weekend — Carlsen recorded a double double in all three matches — as well as service aces with eight. Her 4.42 kills and 5.38 points per set lead the Centennial Conference, while her hitting percentage of .331 ranks fourth. Her weekend was highlighted by a 3-1 victory over Colorado College in which she tallied a team-high 20 kills on a .385 hitting percentage to go along with 15 digs and four aces

Defensive Player of the Week
Juliet Young, Jr., Libero, Haverford 
Guilford, Conn. | Guilford
Young notched 63 digs (6.30 per set) in a 2-1 weekend for the Fords. She also added six assists and 58 serve receptions with just four errors (.931). Young, an AVCA All-America honorable mention as a freshman in 2021, currently leads the Centennial Conference in total digs (153) and digs per set (5.67).
