Athletes of the Week: March 4-10

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Patrick Kelly of McDaniel baseball put together a historic performance while Mike Rabayda of Haverford baseball earned his second weekly award of the young season to lead this week's Centennial Conference honorees for the week of March 4-10. 

A number of Centennial schools are on spring break this week, with action heating up across the country in baseball, softball, tennis and lacrosse. Several outdoor track & field teams will open up the spring season this week as well.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week

Patrick Kelly, Fr., C, McDaniel 
Great Falls, Va. | Langley 
Kelly became just the third player in Centennial history to hit two grand slams in the same game, helping McDaniel to a 2-1 week with wins over New England College and Catholic. The freshman posted a .444 batting average, going 4-for-9 with all four of his going for extra bases as he had a double, triple and two home runs for a 1.444 slugging percentage. He hit two grand slams in a 17-4 win over New England College, totaling eight RBIs. He followed that up with a double and triple in a 15-7 win over Catholic where he had three more RBIs. 

Pitcher of the Week
Mike Rabayda, Sr., RHP, Haverford 
Richboro, Pa. | Council Rock South
Rabayda delivered a standout performance in the spring break opener for the Fords, registering 6.2 innings of three-hit ball, striking out 11 with no walks and without allowing an earned run in Haverford's 2-1 victory over Skidmore in seven innings. Rabayda began by striking out the side in the first and second innings, recording two more in the third and one in the fourth. Skidmore batters hit just .115 in the contest.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week

Carlie Goldstein, Sr., C/DP, Gettysburg
Verona, N.J. | Verona 
Goldstein led the Bullets to a sweep of Hood on Friday, rapping out four hits that included three doubles. On the day, she went 4-for-6 with the three doubles, four runs scored and an RBI.

Pitcher of the Week
Paige Forry, Jr., LHP, Gettysburg
Reading, Pa. | Schuylkill Valley 
Forry threw a gem in a 5-0 game one win at Hood on Friday, allowing just one baserunner in her 6 1/3 of work. The single came as a bloop hit with one out in the sixth. She also struck out five without a walk.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Jason Fritz, Jr., A, McDaniel 
Germantown, Md. | Clarksburg
Fritz finished with a season-high eight points, totaling four goals and four assists in a 19-7 win over Juniata in the team's home opener on Friday. His eight points were two shy of his career-high 10 he had in a 14-4 win versus Goucher on March 1, 2023 when he had four goals and six assists. He now has 100 career points in 30 career games with 56 goals and 44 assists.

Defensive Player of the Week
Evan Karetsos, Jr., D, Dickinson
Atlanta, Ga. | Pace Academy 
Karetsos caused six turnovers and scooped up eight ground balls as the Red Devils remained unbeaten with wins over 20th-ranked Kenyon and Stevenson, which was receiving votes in the national poll. Karetsos recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls in each contest, helping to lead the Dickinson defense to an average of just 7.0 goals against per game.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Mia Salvatierra, So., A, Washington College 
Bel Air, Md. | Fallston
Salvatierra scored four goals to tie for the game-high, including the game-winning goal with 40 seconds to go in the Shorewomen's 13-12 win at Rowan on Wednesday afternoon.  The sophomore scored all four of her goals after halftime, including a long distance shot from 15 yards out to give WC a 10-9 lead with six seconds left in the third quarter.  Salvatierra scored four of WC's last six goals, including two of the three scored by the Shorewomen in the fourth quarter.

Defensive Player of the Week
McKenna Seashole, Jr., GK, Washington College 
Spring Grove, Pa. | Spring Grove 
Seashole made a career-high 17 saves and also picked up a team-high three ground balls in the Shorewomen's 13-12 win at Rowan on Wednesday afternoon in a game where WC was outshot 40-29.  The junior made at least three saves in each quarter, including five in the second and third stanzas. She stopped nine shots in the first half and turned away eight after halftime. She is the first WC goalie to stop 17 shots in a game in 16 years.

Athlete of the Week
Ethan Yu, Sr., Ursinus
Wilmington, Del. | The Tatnall School 
Yu put up a perfect week down in Florida for the Bears this past week as the team went 5-0 on their spring break trip. He went 4-0 at No. 2 singles and 4-0 at No. 2 doubles with Darby Rogers. Three of his singles wins came in straight sets and three of his doubles wins came from sizable margins of (8-2, 8-0, 8-3). Yu recorded his 50th overall career win between singles and doubles action against Concordia Moorhead on Thursday and he helped deliver the decisive point in doubles with Rogers as Ursinus edged St. John's (Minn.) 5-4 on Friday.

Athlete of the Week
Allie Armour, Jr., Ursinus 
Columbus, N.J. | Northern Burlington County Regional 
Armour had a strong week down in Florida, going 5-1 in No. 1 singles action while picking up three No. 1 doubles wins as well. Armour closed her week with five straight singles wins after dropping her first with all but one coming in straight sets. Armour closed her week with a thrilling 7-6 (4-0), 6-4 win over Peyton Kopel of College of St. Benedict on Friday afternoon.
