Athletes of the Week: Sept. 16-22

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Sept. 16-22, 2024 in the sports of cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. Last week marked the opening of CC play in men's and women's soccer, with field hockey and volleyball set to open conference competition this weekend. 

A pair of two-time winners headline this week's honorees - Emmanuel Leblond of Johns Hopkins men's cross country and Len Yamabe of Swarthmore men's soccer.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Emmanuel Leblond, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Mountain View, Calif. | Mountain View
Leblond finished fourth in a field of 385 competitors that featured a number of nationally-ranked programs at the John McNichols Invitational, including top-ranked UW-La Crosse and second-ranked Wartburg. Leblond solidified his status as a two-time All-American with a time of 24:23.3 in the 8k event, helping lead the Blue Jays to a fourth-place team finish as they beat out the likes of fifth-ranked Lynchburg and 13th-ranked WashU in Hopkins' second meet of the season.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Carter Brotherton, Fr., Johns Hopkins
Leonardtown, Md. | Great Mills
Brotherton looked like a veteran at the John McNichols Invitational this past weekend, pacing all Blue Jays with a ninth-place finish in the Open race to lead Hopkins to a fourth-place team finish. The freshman crossed the line with a time of 22:06.9 to place ninth in a stacked field of 299 runners, helping the Blue Jays defeat the likes of eighth-ranked WashU and ninth-ranked UW-La Crosse.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Erin DiSandro, Jr., F, Muhlenberg

Mount Laurel, N.J. | Paul VI
DiSandro scored four of six goals as Muhlenberg went 2-0 to extend its winning streak to five. She netted the lone goal of a 1-0 win against Misericordia, scoring in the third quarter after dribbling the ball through the legs of a defender. In a 5-0 shutout of Vassar, DiSandro recorded the first hat trick by a Mule since 2016, scoring once in each of the final three quarters.

Defensive Player of the Week
Meghan Dole, So., GK, Franklin & Marshall 
Wayne, Pa. | Radnor
Dole was a wall in net for the Diplomats last week, leading her team to two shutout victories. Dole made five saves in the 4-0 win over Alvernia, and later followed that performance with four saves in the 2-0 victory over Washington & Lee. The sophomore now has eight career shutouts in 25 starts.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Len Yamabe, So., M, Swarthmore 
Tokyo, Japan | American School in Japan
Yamabe notched four goals in a 2-0 week for the 16th-ranked Garnet. The sophomore opened the week with his first career hat trick in a 7-0 victory over Wilkes. He then tallied the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win at Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference opener. Yamabe has scored in three-straight games and leads the CC in goals and points. 

Defensive Player of the Week

White tallied a pair of shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for the Shoremen.  In Wednesday's 1-0 victory over visiting King's (Pa.), the senior turned away three shots, including a save in the 84th minute off of a header to preserve the lead. On Saturday in a scoreless draw with visiting and fifth-ranked Dickinson in the Centennial opener, he stopped four shots, helping hold the Red Devils scoreless for the first time this year.

Boujoukos helped F&M women's soccer to a 2-0 week, including a 6-0 victory over Bryn Mawr to open Centennial Conference play. Boujoukos highlighted her week with a hat trick in the 5-1 win over Arcadia. The junior now is second on the team in both points (six) and goals (three).

Defensive Player of the Week
Sophia Kavulich, Sr., GK, Dickinson
Pennington, N.J. | The Pennington School 
Kavulich posted a pair of clean sheets last week resulting in a draw and a victory. She opened the week with three stops in a scoreless draw at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. In the Centennial Conference opener on Saturday at Washington College, Kavulich notched a season-high seven saves in a 1-0 win. The shutouts were Kavulich's fourth and fifth of the season, which ranks atop the conference and is tied for first in the nation.

Offensive Player of the Week

Allison McKechnie, Jr., S, Washington College 
Aliso Viejo, Calif. | Jserra Catholic 
McKechnie hit .367, averaging 6.89 assists, 3.00 kills, and 0.67 aces per set to go along with a pair of double-doubles in a 3-0 week for the Shorewomen. McKechnie's week of well-rounded stat lines began during Tuesday's three-set win over Alvernia. She led all players with 12 kills, which tied per personal-best, 21 assists and four aces for her first double-double of the week, while hitting .476.  On Saturday in the second match of the day, the junior tallied 10 kills and 18 assists in a 3-0 triumph over visiting Eastern Mennonite on her way to hitting .450 in the contest. Earlier in the day in a three-set victory over visiting Rutgers-Camden, McKechnie led all players with 23 assists. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Melissa Eyer, Fr., DS/L, Swarthmore 
Nampa, Idaho | Skyview
Eyer tallied 31 digs, five aces and seven assists in a 2-0 week for Swarthmore. The first-year led the Garnet in digs for both their victories, averaging 5.17 digs per set in a pair of sweeps. Eyer tallied 13 digs with four aces in a 3-0 victory against SUNY New Paltz before registering 18 digs and an ace in a 3-0 win at Kean. Eyer leads the CC in digs in digs per game this season (4.43).
