One for the Thumb: Garnet Win Fifth Straight

LANCASTER, Pa. – Swarthmore captured its fifth consecutive Centennial Conference women's swimming title on Sunday, edging Johns Hopkins by 15.5 points for the team crown. The Garnet, who now own claim to seven CC crowns, become the third program in CC history to win at least five straight titles along with Gettysburg (1994-2000) and Ursinus (2014-19). 

Competing in its first-ever CC meet, Hopkins totaled 803.5 to finish in second place. Gettysburg took thirid with 626 points, followed by Ursinus (299), Franklin & Marshall (259), Dickinson (231.5), Washington College (189), Bryn Mawr (141) and McDaniel (104). 

The Garnet won gold in 14 of the 18 events, led once again by Quinn Weygandt, who took home Most Outstanding Performer honors for the third straight season, becoming just the third swimmer in CC history to win the award three times. The senior was the only competitor in the meet to win three gold medals, breaking one conference record, two championship meet records and recording three NCAA B cut times. She made history by becoming the first swimmer in conference history to sweep the individual medley events in four straight championships, and also won the 200 butterfly for the third year in a row. 

Genine Collins also won multiple events for Swarthmore, repeating as champion in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Other multi-event winners included JHU's Ken Lee (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke) and Gettysburg's Mia Morreale (200 freestyle, 200 backstroke). 

Three record were broken during Sunday's timed finals session. Morreale set a new championship standard in the 200 backstroke at 1:59.03, Collins broke the conference and meet records in the 100 freestyle at 50.44 and the Garnet 400 freestyle relay of Collins, Riley Bacinski, Weygandt and Elle Anthony set new conference and meet records at 3:23.55. 

Six conference records and nine championship meet records were established throughout the meet.
