McDaniel's Monn Advances to Semifinals; Ursinus' Abdelatty Earns All-America

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - McDaniel senior Thomas Monn earned All-America honors with two wins on the first day of the 2026 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Alliant Energy Power House on Friday while Ursinus junior Mohamed Abdelatty also collected All-America recognition on day one.

Monn is the first Green Terror in program history to earn three All-America honors and the fourth in the history of the Centennial Conference, joining Matt Loesch from Muhlenberg (2005, 2006, 2007), Paul Bewak from Johns Hopkins (2012, 2014, 2015), and Brandon Jones from NYU (2013, 2014, 2015). With his third All-America, McDaniel has now had 17 All-America selections in its history, the most in Centennial Conference history, surpassing Stevens who had 16 from 2008 to 2019.

In addition, with his second win to advance him the national semifinals at 149 pounds, Monn picked up his 42nd win of the season, surpassing Steve Smiddy for most wins in a season in program history. Smiddy had 41 during the 1996-97 season. Monn is now 42-0 this season, including 28-0 in tournament matches. For his career, he is 144-11, including 82-10 in tournament matches and a mark of 10-5 at the national championships.

The top-seed at 149 pounds and ranked second nationally, Monn began the day with a major decision over 14th-ranked Ryan Hinger of Elmhurst, 11-2. He then posted a 5-3 decision against ninth-seeded and 11th-ranked Max Mukhamedaliyev of the University of Chicago to advance to his first-ever national semifinals.

Needing two wins to claim McDaniel's first-ever national championship in wrestling, Monn will face the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, Dom Mallinder of Wisconsin-Whitewater who is seeded fifth, on Saturday. The best ever finish for a Green Terror at the national championships is third. Brock Glotfelty finished third at 285 pounds in 2011 and Ryan O'Boyle placed third at 133 pounds in 2016.

Championship semifinals get underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the championship finals at 8 p.m. Both times are Eastern.

Abdelatty led the Bears' lineup by reaching the second day of competition and securing All-American status with a 2-1 record. Andrew Schaen (141) and Braden Kmak (157) also made their respective debuts at the national tournament for the Bears.

Seeded eighth at 285 pounds, Abdelatty dropped his opening bout by a 9-3 score against Loras College's Jonah Clark. However, he responded in the consolation bracket by earning a pair of victories to secure All-American honors and reach the second day of competition. Abdelatty first tallied a first-period fall over Ithaca's Kamdyn Dorchester before defeating Augsburg's Tyler Raway by a 5-4 decision in the blood round.

Against Ithaca's Kamdyn Dorchester, Abdelatty secured the match's opening takedown with a low single leg before adjusting his positioning to secure a bundle and the fall at the 1:44 mark. He will meet Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Vanscoy in his opening bout Saturday morning for a chance to clinch a spot in the consolation semifinals.

n the 157-pound weight class, Kmak finished with a 1-2 record to conclude his junior season with a 39-9 overall mark. He opened with a first-period fall over Case Western Reserve's Thomas Wagner at the 1:30 mark. During the bout, Kmak dodged an initial shot by Wagner before reshooting on a single leg. After earning the takedown, Kmak locked up a near-side cradle and adjusted his position for his 23rd pin of the season, which ranks second on the team.

Kmak advanced in the championship bracket but fell by fall to second-seeded Trent Mahoney of Albright College. In his final match, Kmak dropped a 14-1 major decision to Wisconsin-La Crosse's Joe Penchi. He concludes a breakout junior season that included a runner-up finish at both the Centennial Conference Championships and the Region III Championships.

At 141 pounds, Schaen dropped a pair of close matches to finish his campaign with a 36-9 overall record. In the preliminary round, Schaen fell 15-12 in sudden victory to Wisconsin-La Crosse's Marcus McIntyre before dropping a 5-1 decision to Wisconsin-Whitewater's Justin Fortugno.

Against McIntyre in his opening match, Schaen tallied three takedowns and held an 11-9 lead entering the final period, but a takedown in the third period and overtime proved to be the difference. He closes out a stellar junior season, ranking second on the team in victories while earning a runner-up finish at the Centennial Conference Championships and placing third at the Region III Championships.

Gettysburg's Gavin Pascoe competed at 157, recording a 2-2 record. In the opening preliminary round, Wisconsin-Whitewater's Luke Swan edged Pascoe with a takedown midway through the third period for a 4-2 decision.
