Athletes of the Week: Oct. 2-8

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Oct. 2-8 in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. Simrin Carlsen of Johns Hopkins volleyball becomes the first three-time award winner of the fall, while cross country standouts Peter LaRochelle of Haverford and Amiyah Priebe of Dickinson earned weekly honors for the second time.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Peter LaRochelle, Jr., Haverford
Great Barrington, Mass. | Monument Mountain Regional
LaRochelle was the top Centennial Conference finisher at the NCAA Pre-National Invitational hosted by Dickinson, which featured 12 nationally-ranked teams competing on the same course that will host the Division III Championships later this fall. LaRochelle paced the Fords for a 29th place overall finish in 25:32.0 on the 8k course. As a team, Haverford finished 11th overall, outpacing a pair of nationally-ranked squads - No. 34 SUNY Brockport and No. 35 Hope.

Athlete of the Week
Amiyah Priebe, Jr., Dickinson
Newport, Pa. | Newport 
Priebe raced to 44th place among 366 runners at the Pre-National Invitational at Big Spring High School, site for next month's NCAA National Championships. The Red Devil junior crossed the 6k finish line in 22:54.9, helping Dickinson to 16th place out of 39 teams.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Abby Marthins, Sr., F/M, Dickinson

Marthins scored in both of Dickinson's wins last week as the Red Devils went 2-0 with a pair of conference road games to continue their climb up the standings. On Wednesday against McDaniel, she cashed in off a corner opportunity to give the Devils their third goal in a 3-1 win over the Green Terror. Marthins followed that up on Saturday with the only goal of the contest in a 1-0 shutout of 23rd-ranked Bryn Mawr. For the week, she recorded just two shots and scored on both. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Kate Gromacki, Sr., D/M, Washington College
Forest Hill, Md. | John Carroll 
Gromacki helped lead the Shorewomen defense to a pair of 2-0 shutouts with victories over Haverford and 16th-ranked Ursinus. In the win over Haverford, the Shorewomen gave up just four shots, including zero in the fourth quarter. Against Ursinus, Gromacki helped Washington hold Ursinus to just nine shots after Ursinus had averaged 23.7 shots per game in the prior three contests. Gromacki also contributed on offense with the assist on the game-winning goal versus Haverford 53 seconds into the fourth quarter. The shutout victory over Ursinus marked the first time the Shorewomen blanked the Bears, their first win over Ursinus since 2012 and their first win vs. a ranked team since 2011.

Offensive Player of the Week
Saul Iwowo, So., Fr, Dickinson

Iwowo scored three goals as Dickinson went 2-0 with wins against Hood and McDaniel. Iwowo began the week with a pair of scores, including the game-winner, in a 4-0 win over Hood before tallying the opening goal for the Red Devils in a 2-1 road win against McDaniel. For the week he recorded three goals (six points) on 13 shots (eight on target) in 162 minutes played.

Defensive Player of the Week
Nolan Booth, So., GK, Franklin & Marshall 
Nazareth, Pa. | Nazareth Area 
Booth picked up his second shutout of the season and the third clean sheet of his career in the Diplomats' 4-0 win over Alvernia Monday night. Booth then went on to make five saves in a win over No. 16 Muhlenberg, including a diving stop in the 75th minute to keep the Mules from tying the game.

Offensive Player of the Week

Bri Skidmore, Sr., F, Franklin & Marshall
Mount Airy, Md. | Urbana 
Skidmore totaled three goals and one assist in the Diplomats' 2-0 week. Skidmore scored the game-winner in the 30th minute of the 5-0 win over Ursinus Wednesday afternoon. The senior then buried her second goal of the game in the 50th minute to put F&M up 3-0 over the Bears. In a 3-0 win over Muhlenberg on Saturday, Skidmore found Zoe Warne in front of the net to put F&M up 1-0 in the eighth minute and later found the back of the net in the 48th minute for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Ava Venuti, Fr., D, Johns Hopkins 
Bedford, Mass. | Buckingham Browne & Nichols
Venuti helped anchor a Blue Jay defense that posted a pair of shutout victories with a 3-0 win over Washington College and a 5-0 victory at Gettysburg. JHU didn't allow a shot against the Shorewomen and just two shots at Gettysburg.  In addition to her exploits on defense, Venuti added an assist in the win over the Bullets.

Carlsen built on her already impressive 2023 campaign with a historic night in a week in which the Blue Jays went 3-0. The junior started her week with an 18-kill, 16-dig effort in a 3-1 win over Gettysburg before making history by setting a new program record in kills in a five-set match with 27 — paired with 12 digs — in Hopkins' 3-2 win over Stevenson. Carlsen finished her weekend with another 12 kills in a sweep of Muhlenberg, bringing her weekly averages to 4.75 kills and 5.13 points per set. The Edison, NJ-natives marks of 4.56 kills and 5.18 points per set lead the Centennial Conference.

Defensive Player of the Week
Roxy Karrer, Jr., DS/OH, Johns Hopkins 
Los Altos, Calif. | Menlo 
Karrer did it all for Hopkins last week, leading the team to wins in both of the matches she appeared in. In the Jay's midweek matchup against Gettysburg, Karrer secured her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and a career-best 23 digs to go along with four service aces and her second block of the year. Later in the week versus Stevenson, the junior added another eight kills to pair with 15 digs, bringing her weekly average a team-best 4.22 digs per set.
