Athletes of the Week: Dec. 4-10

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The fall semester is winding down and so are competition schedules for the majority of winter sports, with this week marking the final Centennial Conference weekly honors for most sports in 2023. CC weekly awards were distributed for the week of Dec. 4-10, 2023 in basketball, indoor track & field and wrestling. 

Reid Garrison of Merchant Marine wrestling highlights this week's honorees as a repeat winner after another win against a nationally-ranked opponent last week. Scroll below for the full list of weekly award winners from last week's action. 
MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week

Giovanni Rubino, Sr., G, Muhlenberg
Pequannock, N.J. | Cheshire Academy (Conn.)
Rubino averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 65.4% from the field in a 1-1 week for the Mules. Rubino made his first seven field goal attempts en route to scoring 24 points and dishing out a season-high five assists in a 78-72 win against Haverford. He had five points and a pair of assists down the stretch to help Muhlenberg overcome a 10-point deficit in the final 10 minutes. Rubino added 20 points in a non-conference loss at Marymount.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Greta Miller, Jr., F, Johns Hopkins
Park Ridge, Ill. | Maine South
Miller was dominant in a 2-0 week that saw the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team extend its current win streak to seven games, averaging 18 points and seven rebounds per contest on 46% shooting from the field and a red-hot 67% from three-point territory. The junior opened the week with her second double-double of the season, tallying 18 points and 10 rebounds to pair with three steals, two assists and one block in a win over F&M, following that up with another 18-point effort in a win over Dickinson. The junior set a new career-best from behind the arc in the win over the Red Devils, going a perfect 4-for-4 to make her 6-for-9 on the week and 12-for-21 on the year.

WRESTLING

Athlete of the Week

Reid Garrison, Jr., 285, Merchant Marine
Broadway, Va. | Broadway
Garrison repeated as Athlete of the Week after going 2-0 during Merchant Marine's Metro Duals last Saturday that included a thrilling victory over the 14th ranked wrestler in the country. The junior heavyweight opened the day with a last-minute 4-3 win over NYU's 14th-ranked Evan Anderson, before delivering a pin in just 2:51 vs. Jevin Torres of Hunter.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week

Owen Bluman, Fr., Haverford
Pittsburgh, Pa. | Taylor Allderdice
Bluman raced to a mile time of 4:29.15 to take third place in a field of 24 at the Ursinus Bow Tie Invitational. Bluman's converted mile time currently ranks 36th in the nation this season.

Ravi Eaton, Sr., Haverford
New York, N.Y. | The Dalton School
Eaton posted the ninth-best triple jump in Centennial history and the 12th-best mark in Division III at the Ursinus Bow Tie Invitational over the weekend. Eaton's triple jump of 14.05 meters placed him also ranks third in Haverford program history. Eaton also cleared 6.63 meters in the long jump, finishing fourth.

Track Athlete of the Week

Lauren Dunnigan, Fr., Franklin & Marshall
Waldwick, N.J. | Immaculate Heart Academy
Dunnigan broke the F&M school record and posted the 15th-fastest 60 hurdle time in the nation in her collegiate debut. Dunnigan's time of 9.14 seconds broke the previous F&M record held by Rachel Wylie by 17-hundredths of a second en route to first place in the event at the Diplomat Open. The time ranks second in the conference and 15th in Division III through the first two weeks of the indoor season. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Sarah Wilcher, So., Haverford
Indianapolis, Ind. | Park Tudor 
Wilcher notched a shot put mark of 12.28 meters at the Ursinus Bow Tie Invitational, taking second place in the event. Wilcher's mark is ranked 33rd in the nation and atop the Centennial so far this season. The throw marked a new personal-best and is third all-time in school history, as she became the first Haverford athlete since 2018 to clear the 40 foot mark. Wilcher also took third place in the weight throw (13.06m), good for third all-time in school history.
