Athletes of the Week: Sept. 23-29

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Five multi-time winners headline this week's Centennial Conference honors for performances during the week of Sept. 23-29, 2024. Awards were distributed in women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball. 

Simone Adam of Johns Hopkins volleyball leads this week's group of multi-time honorees as a three-time Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Brooklyn Pater earned defensive accolades for the second time this year. Meghan Higgins-Haas of Dickinson women's cross country, Tate Roth of McDaniel men's soccer and Olivia Allen of Washington College women's soccer also garnered their second weekly honors of 2024 based on last week's contests.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Meghan Higgins-Haas, So., Dickinson
Boyertown, Pa. | Oley Valley
Higgins-Haas led the Red Devils to victory in the 6k race at the Dickinson College Long-Short XC Invitational, finishing first with a time of 24:24.6. Her performance helped Dickinson claim the team title with nine points.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Novy Goetgeluk, Sr., M, Bryn Mawr

Strijen, Netherlands | Stedelijk Dalton Lyceum Overkampweg
Goetgeluk was a major contributor to Bryn Mawr's two wins as she collected a goal apiece in the Owls' past two games. The midfielder's goal against Lebanon Valley tied the game for an eventual second goal and win for Bryn Mawr to keep the Owls' win streak ongoing.

Defensive Player of the Week
Liz Falterer, Sr., D, Johns Hopkins 
Fairfield, Conn. | Fairfield Warde
Falterer anchored the Blue Jay defense, allowing just five total shots and three penalty corners in two shutout wins. On Wednesday, Hopkins held McDaniel to zero shots and corners, while Saturday's 2-0 win limited #16 Ursinus to five shots and three corners, despite the Bears averaging over three goals and 11 shots per game.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Chase Sempervive, Sr., F, Gettysburg
New Egypt, N.J. | New Egypt
Sempervive led the Bullets to a 1-0-1 week with four goals. He scored twice in a 7-0 win over Penn State-Brandywine on Wednesday before scoring both goals in a 2-all draw at Haverford on Saturday. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Tate Roth, So., GK, McDaniel
Lancaster, Pa. | Hempfield
Roth made four saves as McDaniel posted its fourth straight shutout, extending its shutout streak to 369 minutes. He posted two wins and two shutouts with a 1-0 conference victory over Washington College, the eighth-ranked team in the United Soccer Coaches Region V rankings.

Yardley, Pa. | Villa Joseph Marie
Sullivan totaled three goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Blue Jays.  She scored twice in a 4-1 win at Dickinson and then added one goal and one assist in a 6-0 win over Ursinus.

Defensive Player of the Week
Olivia Allen, So., GK, Washington College
West Pittston, Pa. | Wyoming Area
Allen posted a pair of shutouts in a 2-0-0 week for the Shorewomen.  The sophomore turned away three shots, including one in the 83rd minute in the Shorewomen's 1-0 victory at Bryn Mawr on Wednesday for their first Centennial Conference win of the campaign.  On Saturday, Allen stopped a pair of shots in a 3-0 WC win at Stevenson with both saves coming in the second half.

Offensive Player of the Week

Menlo Park, Calif. | Menlo School 
Adam once again paced a potent Blue Jays attack in a 3-0 weekend at the Hopkins Invitational, averaging 4.44 points and 4.00 kills per set while hitting .425. The junior opened her weekend with eight kills while hitting a weekend-best .471 in a win over Eastern, following that up with 16 kills against Eastern before tallying 12 kills in just two sets in a sweep of Mary Washington.

Sioux Falls, S.D. | Sioux Falls Christian
Pater delivered a strong defensive performance in the Blue Jays' 3-0 weekend, averaging 2.13 blocks per set in wins over Eastern, Cortland, and Mary Washington. The senior set a program record with 11 block assists in a sweep of Eastern, helping Hopkins break a 26-block assist record dating back to 1996. Pater added six blocks in a four-set win over Cortland and appeared in one set against Mary Washington.
