GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Merchant Marine secured its fifth Centennial Conference wrestling championship and first since 2011 on Saturday at Gettysburg, knocking off two-time defending champion Ursinus by the smallest margin of victory in conference championship history.

The Mariners climbed back atop the conference with 82 team points, defeating Ursinus by just 1.5 points to set a new conference record for the closest championship finish between first and second place teams. Merchant Marine's previous four titles came in a four-year stretch from 2008-11. With the win, the Mariners tied former associate member Stevens for the second-most team titles in CC history with five.

Ursinus narrowly finished in second place with 80.5 points, followed by Muhlenberg (68), McDaniel (55.5), Gettysburg (54.5) and Johns Hopkins (12.5).

McDaniel's Thomas Monn was honored as the Most Outstanding Performer of the championship after compiling 15 points for McDaniel as he claimed his third consecutive title at 149 pounds. After receiving a first-round bye, he proceeded to win by pin and major decision to earn the title. Monn's title bout win by major decision vs. Gettysburg's Ethan Composto featured two of the three nationally-ranked wrestlers in the field on Saturday.

Merchant Marine's Reid Garrison also captured his third straight crown at 285 and was awarded the Chris Clifford Award, given annually to the senior with the most career points accumlated at the CC championship. Throughout his four championships, Garrison totaled 49 career points with three titles and a fourth-place finish as a freshman in 2022.

Muhlenberg's Joey Lamparelli (125) joined Monn and Garrison as three-time gold medalists. Lamparelli won by decision in the semifinals and via tiebreaker in the finals to become a three-time champion to close out his CC career. McDaniel's Xavier Howard (157) and Merchant Marine's Tyler Withers (184) also repeated as champions at their respective weight classes. Withers pinned all three of his opponents to run away with the 184 crown.

First-time gold medalists at the CC meet included Merchant Marine's Wesley Wydick (133), Muhlenberg's Andrew Loniewski (141), Gettysburg's Justin Richey (157), Ursinus' Anthony Cerulli (174), and McDaniel's Val Pryor (197).

McDaniel and Merchant Marine led the way with three individual golds apiece, while Muhlenberg earned two golds and Gettysburg and Ursinus both claimed one.

Ursinus still leads all Centennial schools with 63 champions since 1994. McDaniel (54) is just ahead of Muhlenberg (53) for second place, followed Merchant Marine (39), Stevens (35), Johns Hopkins (28), Gettysburg (28), Washington and Lee (7), Swarthmore (2) and NYU (1).
