Athletes of the Week: Sept. 22-28

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Sept. 22-28 in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. 

Liza Barbash of Dickinson women's cross country and Melissa Eyer of Swarthmore volleyball lead this week's contingent of award winners with their second CC accolade of the fall season.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Jack Sears, Sr., McDaniel 
New Market, Md. | Linganore 
Sears placed fourth among 163 competitors in the 8K at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational Saturday, setting a new program course record with a time of 26:08.9. His time broke the school course record previously held by Gavin Gibson in 2016 by 38 seconds. Sears also turned in the 18th-fastest 8K time in school history and now holds five of the top 20 times in program history.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Liza Barbash, So., Dickinson 
Phoenixville, Pa. | Phoenixville 
Barbash earned weekly honors for the second time this season after winning the 4K at the Dickinson Long-Short Invite on Saturday at Big Spring High School. The sophomore bested a field of 113 competitors with a time of 14:21.5 in the 4K.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Naomi York, Sr., A/M, Haverford 

Coronado, Calif. | Coronado
York scored three times in a 2-0 week for Haverford, highlighted by an upset of No. 16 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. The Coronado, Calif. native opened the week with a four-point performance against DeSales, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs. York then followed that performance up with a tally on her lone shot of the match on Saturday, helping Haverford defeat F&M and secure its first-ever season with three wins over ranked opponents.

Defensive Player of the Week
Steph Ionescu, So., GK, Haverford 
Wilton, Conn. | Hotchkiss 
Ionescu backstopped the Fords to a 2-0 record that included an upset of No. 16 Franklin & Marshall. On Wednesday, the sophomore turned away both shots she faced in a 2-0 shutout of DeSales. She followed that up with a season-best performance on Saturday, making 10 saves on 12 shots to help the Scarlet and Black edge the No. 16 Diplomats, 3-2. With the win, Ionescu helped the Fords secure the program’s first-ever season with three victories over ranked opponents.

Offensive Player of the Week
Saleem Diakite, So., M, Muhlenberg
Northampton, Pa. | Moravian Academy 
Diakite scored two breakaway goals in the final 10 minutes to lead the Mules to a 4-2 win against Gettysburg. His first goal, with 9:58 remaining, broke a 2-2 tie, and Diakite slipped behind the Bullet defense to score again with 26 seconds remaining. Diakite, who came into the game with a career total of three goals, is the first Muhlenberg player since 1994 to score two goals in the last 10 minutes of a Centennial Conference game. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Davis Rorick, So., GK, Franklin & Marshall 
Germantown, Md. | Our Lady of Good Counsel 
Rorick was a force in net during F&M's 1-0 victory over Swarthmore on Saturday. Playing the final 65 minutes of the match, Rorick made seven saves and didn't allow a goal to help the Diplomats earn their first CC victory of the season.

Offensive Player of the Week

Carolyn Johnson, So., M, Johns Hopkins 
St. Augustine, Fla. | Bartram Trail 
Johnson powered Johns Hopkins to a pair of Centennial Conference road victories as she scored three goals in the two wins.  She netted one, the Blue Jays' second goal, in a 4-0 win at McDaniel, and then posted the first multi-goal game of her career with both strikes in Johns Hopkins' 2-0 win at Haverford. She has now scored at least one goal in six of the last seven games.

Defensive Player of the Week
Ella Macko, Sr., D, Johns Hopkins 
Burlingame, Calif. | Burlingame 
Macko led a Johns Hopkins defense that posted a pair of road shutouts and allowed just eight total shots in two league victories. She scored once (the game-winner) and helped the Blue Jays limit McDaniel to just two shots in a 4-0 victory, then kept a ball out of the goal (officially a team save) early in a 2-0 win at Haverford. The Blue Jays allowed just six shots in the two-goal win against the Fords.

VOLLEYBALL

Offensive Player of the Week

Helena Swaak, Sr., S, Johns Hopkins 
McLean, Va. | Langley 
Swaak played a key role in leading the Blue Jays to a 2-1 weekend, highlighted by wins over previously undefeated No. 22 Wesleyan and Endicott. The senior was a force on both ends of the court, totaling 28 kills (2.33 per set), 70 assists (5.83 per set), four service aces, 48 digs (4.00 per set) and eight blocks. She recorded her second triple-double of the season in the win over Wesleyan, finishing with 13 kills, 27 assists and 18 digs. In Hopkins' match against Tufts, the McLean, Virginia native reached a major career milestone, surpassing 3,000 career assists—becoming just the ninth active Division III player to do so. She currently ranks fourth all-time in assists in program history.

Nampa, Idaho | Skyview 
Eyer secured Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year after averaging 5.46 digs per set in a 3-1 week for the Garnet, totaling 71 digs and 0 reception errors. The sophomore had a week-best 26 digs in a four-set win over Stockton. She also led the team in digs for all three victories.
