Athletes of the Week: Sept. 30-Oct. 6

LANCASTER, Pa. -- A quintet of multi-time award recipients lead this week's Centennial Conference honors for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6, 2024. Honorees were chosen in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball as conference play has now commenced for all CC fall sports. 

Simone Adam of Johns Hopkins volleyball once again headlines the list of multi-time winners, earning her second straight and fourth overall weekly award of 2024. JHU's Emmanuel Leblond secured his third men's cross country honor of the year, while Mary Huegel of Gettysburg volleyball, Lila Slattery of Johns Hopkins field hockey and Carter Brotherton of Johns Hopkins women's cross country earned weeky accolades for the second time.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Emmanuel Leblond, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Mountain View, Calif. | Mountain View
Leblond put together one of the strongest races of his collegiate career at Saturday's Paul Short Invitational, finishing as the top Division III runner by nearly 30 seconds in the Gold 8K. The junior crossed the line in 28th with a time of 24:04.0 to help lead the Blue Jays to a 16th-place team finish and beat out Division III foes Carnegie Mellon and RPI as well as a number of strong Division I programs.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Carter Brotherton, Fr., Johns Hopkins
Leonardtown, Md. | Great Mills
Brotherton impressed once again at Saturday's Paul Short Invitational, finishing 57th with a time of 21:03.1 to help lead the Blue Jays to finish 23rd in a field of entirely Division I programs. The freshman climbed 16 spots from the two-mile marker to the finish line to pace Hopkins and finish in front of over 300 competitors.

Offensive Player of the Week
Lila Slattery, Gr., M, Johns Hopkins

Severna Park, Md. | Severna Park
Slattery had a hand in all four of Hopkins’ goals as the Blue Jays went 2-0 on the week. She scored both goals in JHU’s 2-1 win over Gettysburg on Wednesday and notched the game-winner and assisted on the second tally in Hopkins’ 2-0 win at Muhlenberg on Saturday. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Wilmington, Del. | Tower Hill School
Malatesta helped F&M to a 2-0 week in Centennial play with wins over Dickinson and No. 10 Bryn Mawr. Malatesta had a game-saving defensive save in the third quarter of the win vs. Bryn Mawr. The senior also played a key role on offense with the game-winning goal of the Diplomats' 1-0 win over the Owls.

Offensive Player of the Week
Ethan Jarden, Jr., F, Dickinson
West Chester, Pa. | Henderson
Jarden totaled four goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the ninth-ranked Red Devils. He opened the week with a hat trick in a thrilling 4-3 home victory against Gettysburg, tallying his three goals on just three shots, including the game-winner in the 70th minute. It marked the first win for Dickinson over the Bullets since 2018. On Saturday at Haverford, Jarden scored the game's opening goal in the 38th minute before handing out the assist in the game-winner by Saul Iwowo in a 2-1 triumph for Dickinson. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Anthony Pinto, Sr., GK, Washington College 
Matawan, N.J. | Christian Brothers Academy
Playing in his first game since the season opener, Pinto made seven saves, including six in the second half, in the Shoremen's 1-0 win at Ursinus on Saturday afternoon. Two of his stops came in the final 5:37 of the game with Washington holding onto a one-goal lead, the final one coming with 1:17 remaining in the second half to preserve the shutout and win.  The seven saves are a season-best by a Washington College goalie.

Pepe scored the first goal in both of F&M's games last week as the Diplomats went 1-0-1. Pepe recorded the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute in the Diplomats' 4-1 win over Penn State Berks and also added an assist in that contest. Pepe also scored in F&M's 1-1 tie against McDaniel. Pepe is now tied for the team lead in both points (11) and goals (five) so far this season.

Defensive Player of the Week

Warren, N.J. | Watchung Hills Regional 
Morris helped anchor a Shorewomen defense that pitched a pair of shutouts and allowed just three shots on goal in a 1-0-1 week.  Washington allowed just two shots on target in a 3-0 win over visiting DeSales on Tuesday night and on Saturday permitted just one shot on goal in a scoreless tie at Ursinus.

Offensive Player of the Week

Simone Adam, Jr., OH, Johns Hopkins
Menlo Park, Calif. | Menlo School 
Adam continued her dominant stretch of play in a 2-0 weekend for the Blue Jays, averaging 4.17 kills and 4.50 points per set while hitting .512. The junior kicked off the weekend with 13 kills to pair with three digs and two blocks in a Centennial Conference win over Ursinus before adding another 12 kills while hitting .556 with two more blocks in a sweep of York. Adam extended her conference-best kills per set average to 3.70 on the season following Saturday's performances, with the junior also ranking second in hitting percentage at .391.

Defensive Player of the Week

Marlboro, N.J. | Colts Neck
Huegel led the Bullets to a 3-0 win over Muhlenberg in the conference opener on Saturday. She matched her career high with nine total blocks while adding four aces and seven kills. She hit .500 on the day as well and had two digs.
