The 30th annual Centennial Conference wrestling championship is set for Saturday at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. with action beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Gill Center. This will mark the sixth time McDaniel has hosted the wrestling championship and first time since 2016.
Defending champion Ursinus is seeking its second consecutive and 13th overall Centennial wrestling title following a perfect 5-0 record in CC duals. The Bears totaled 84 points at the 2023 championship to defeat McDaniel (73.5) by 10.5 points and earn their first team championship since 2014. Merchant Marine finished third with 64.5 points, followed by Muhlenberg (55), Gettysburg (47.5) and Johns Hopkins (27.5).
The Bears' 13 team titles leads the CC all-time list and is eight more than the next-closest team (5 titles from former associate member Stevens). Merchant Marine (4), McDaniel (4), Washington and Lee (2), Johns Hopkins (1), and Muhlenberg (1) also own CC titles.
Another tight competition for CC hardware is likely on tap for Saturday, with nearly half (7 of 15) of the CC dual matches resulting in 10-point margins or less, including five that were within six points. Ursinus posted a 5-0 mark for the second straight year, while Muhlenberg (4-1) and McDaniel (3-2) each secured winning records.
Five individual champions are back in the fold this year, including the 2023 championship Most Outstanding Wrestler - Luke Kowalski of Gettysburg. Kowalski won the 133-pound title in impressive fashion last winter, pinning both his semifinal and title bout opponents in less than two total minutes (1:48) following an opening-round bye. Now competing at 141, Kowalski boasts a 9-1 overall record including an umblemished 5-0 mark in CC duals.
Reigning CC Wrestler of the Year and Rookie of the Year Thomas Monn of McDaniel will also aim for a repeat title on Saturday. Monn was the champion at 149 last year and is the favorite to repeat at that weight class with a 26-2 overall and 5-0 CC record. Other returning champions from 2023 include Muhlenberg's Joey Lamparelli (125), McDaniel's Jaedyn Harris (197) and Merchant Marine's Reid Garrison (285). Kowalski, Lamparelli and Harris were also bronze medalists back in 2022, while Garrison finished fourth in 2022.
Returning Centennial runners-up include Merchant Marine's Eddie Pinc (2023 runner-up at 149, 2022 runner-up at 141) and Charlie Lausten (2023 runner-up at 141), McDaniel's Xavier Howard (2023 runner-up at 157), Ursinus' Shawn Marchesano (2023 runner-up at 165) and Jake Ahmad (2023 runner-up at 285) and Johns Hopkins' Chris Roybal (2022 runner-up at 157; Competing at 174 in 2023).
In addition to Kowalski, Lamparelli, Harris, others with bronze medals to their names competing again this year include Ursinus' Jagger Clapsadle (2023 bronze at 133) and Dante Monaco (2023 bronze at 149), Merchant Marine's Austin Manning (2023 bronze at 157), and Gettysburg's Phil Nave (2023 bronze at 285; Competing at 197 in 2023).
A trio of wrestlers competing on Saturday are ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) individual national rankings. McDaniel's Monn (149) and Harris (197) are both ranked ninth in their respective weight classes, while Muhlenberg's Lamparelli is 15th at 125. Monn is also ranked sixth by D3wrestle.com while seven others are just outside the top 10 of their weight classes.
You can watch the entire day of competition on your desktop, laptop, tablet or phone at CentennialConference.TV or on your big screen on our OTT channels (Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV).
