Athletes of the Week: Nov. 17-23

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Nov. 17-23 in basketball, swimming, and wrestling. 

McDaniel swept this week's basketball awards, with Elaina Beckett earning weekly accolades for the second time in the opening three weeks of the women's basketball season. 

It was a record-shattering week throughout the conference in swimming, with Ken Lee of Johns Hopkins women's swimming earning conference honors for the third time this year and Evan Graham of Gettysburg men's swimming collecting his second weekly award of the young season. Lee set one conference record while Graham broke three CC marks this past weekend.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Ryan Shaffer, Jr., G, McDaniel
Waynesboro, Pa. | Waynesboro
Shaffer averaged 16.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in two McDaniel wins last week against Penn State Berks and Delaware Valley. He shot 76.5% from the floor, going 13-for-17, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. He notched his first career double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs, in a 71-65 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday as McDaniel rallied from an 11-point deficit. With the visitors holding a nine-point lead, the Green Terror finished the game on a 26-9 run with 11 of those points coming from Shaffer, who totaled 17 of his 25 points in the second half.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Elaina Beckett, Sr., G/F, McDaniel
Mechanicsburg, Pa. | Trinity 
Beckett repeated as Player of the Week after averaging 27.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 5.0 steals in two more McDaniel victories last week. She shot 59% from the floor, going 22-for-37, including 4-for-10 from three-point range, and was also 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Beckett totaled her second 30-point game of the season with 30 points in a 73-38 victory over Eastern, securing a double-double with 10 rebounds along with six assists and seven steals. In an 82-31 win over Notre Dame of Maryland, she had 25 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. The Green Terror are now 6-0 this season and received more votes in the WBCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week
Evan Graham, So., Gettysburg

Graham led the Bullets to a fourth-place finish at the Phoenix Fall Classic hosted by Chicago, finishing the weekend with four program records, three NCAA B-Cuts and three conference records. On Friday, he wrapped up the night by splitting a program- and conference-record 100 backstroke time of 47.98 seconds in the 400 medley relay, which also broke the program record with a time of 3:19.32, placing fourth. On Saturday, he added a B-Cut, program- and conference-record time of 3:54.02 in the prelims of the 400 IM. He also turned in times in both the prelims and finals of the 100 back that would have been program records without his Friday split time. On Saturday, Graham added another B-Cut, program- and conference-record - this time in the 200 backstroke with his time of 1:45.57, which placed second in the field. Graham was also a part of the 200 free relay (seventh in program history, 1:22.08), 200 medley relay (second in program history, 1:29.87) 400 free relay (third in program history, 3:01.53). All three of Graham's conference-record marks currently rank among the top five in Division III this season.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week
Ken Lee, So., Johns Hopkins
Cloverdale, Calif. | Maria Carrillo
Lee was Johns Hopkins' top performer at Loyola Maryland's H2ounds Invitational. Lee won the 200 backstroke in 1:59.46, breaking their own conference record that was set earlier this season, and placed third in both the 100 backstroke (56.30) and 100 butterfly (54.68).  The time Lee posted in the 200 backstroke is the best time in the nation this season in Division III, while the 54.68 in the 100 butterfly ranks second. Lee also owns the eighth-best time in the nation in the 100 backstroke at 55.81, a mark hit twice this season, including in the prelims at Loyola.

WRESTLING 

Athlete of the Week
Braden Kmak, Jr., Ursinus
Hazlet, N.J. | Raritan 
Kmak won the 157-pound title behind four victories by fall, including three first-period falls, at the Misericordia Cougar Classic on Saturday. He opened by pinning York's Jack Doran at the 2:40-mark, before reaching the semifinals with a second-period pin over Misericordia's Brady Colville. Next, he earned a 37-second fall in the semifinals, before pinning Eastern's Braydon Castillo in the finals at the 1:39-mark to secure the title.
