Athletes of the Week: Oct. 20-26

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Oct. 20-26 in cross country, field hockey, soccer, volleyball and swimming.

This marks the final cross country awards of the season with the CC Championship meet set for this Saturday, Nov. 1 at Gettysburg, It also marks the first swimming awards of the year, as all CC teams competed in meets hosted by Gettysburg and Franklin & Marshall last Saturday. One week of conference regular season play remains in field hockey and men's and women's soccer. 

Caitlin Hoover of F&M field hockey headlines this week's award recipients with her third Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season. Aubrey Kilgore of Johns Hopkins field hockey and Tucker Sprano of Washington College men's soccer nabbed weekly awards for the second time this fall.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Cole Branstrom, Fr., Haverford 
Glenview, Ill. | Glenbrook South
Branstrom was the top Division III runner at the Haverford Invitational on Friday, finishing 10th in a field of 69 competitors. Branstrom finished the four mile course in 20:48.0, including a mark of 10:37.9 in the closing two miles.

Montini represented the Garnet at the Haverford Invitational and took ninth place in a field of 44 runners. She finished the 5k race with a time of 19:16.5.

Offensive Player of the Week
Caitlin Hoover, Jr., F, Franklin & Marshall 

Blue Bell, Pa. | The Lawrenceville School (N.J.)
Hoover secured CC weekly honors for the third time this fall following a nine-point week in wins over Ursinus and Dickinson. Hoover scored four goals, including both game-winners, and added an assist on the week for the 17th-ranked Diplomats. In Wednesday's 3-0 win over Ursinus, she posted two goals and one assist, scoring the game-opening and winning goal in the first quarter. In Saturday's 4-0 win over 13th-ranked Dickinson, she scored the first two goals for the Diplomats, including the game-winning goal in the second quarter.

Defensive Player of the Week
Aubrey Kilgore, Jr., GK, Johns Hopkins 
Schwenksville, Pa. | Perkiomen Valley 
Kilgore helped Johns Hopkins to a pair of shutout wins this week. She made five saves in three quarters of a 1-0 win over McDaniel on Wednesday. Kilgore then made two saves in three quarters of a 2-0 win at 16th-ranked Haverford.

Offensive Player of the Week
Tucker Sprano, Jr., M, Washington College 
Annandale, Va. | Falls Church 
Sprano factored into both game-winning goals in the Shoremen's 2-0 week. In a 2-1 win over Swarthmore on Wednesday night, Sprano handed out what proved to be the game-winning assist at the 19:08 mark, feeding Yasir German for a 2-0 WC advantage. Three nights later versus Ursinus, Sprano scored the eventual match-deciding tally in the 51st minute, finishing off a cross by German to make it 2-0 Washington in a 2-1 victory. The junior also earned the penalty kick that led to the Shoremen's first goal late in the first half after drawing a foul in the box.

John Ghanem, So., GK, Johns Hopkins 
Orlando, Fla. | Lake Highland Prep
Ghanem back-stopped Johns Hopkins to a 1-0-1 week against a pair of undefeated teams. On Wednesday, he made six saves as Hopkins tied eighth-ranked Dickinson, 1-1. Ghanem held the potent Red Devils offense to more than 1.3 goals below their season average. Ghanem then made three saves on Saturday in a 1-0 win over Muhlenberg.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week

Ava Gizzie, Jr., F, Swarthmore 
New Canaan, Conn. | Choate Rosemary Hall 
Gizzie set the tone for the 13th-ranked Garnet's 4-0 shutout of Gettysburg, scoring just three minutes into the contest. The victory secured a first-round bye in the Centennial Tournament for Swarthmore, which remains unbeaten in conference play. The tally marked Gizzie's 11th of the campaign, setting a new career high and also vaulting them into the program's all-time top 10 for most goals in a single season. The junior has scored in all but one of their last 11 contests and leads the conference in goals.

Defensive Player of the Week
Colleen Ferrarese, Jr., D, Franklin & Marshall 
Bel Air, Md. | Maryvale Prep
Ferrarese helped lead the F&M defense to two shutout wins last week, including a 1-0 victory over Haverford to secure a spot in the Centennial Conference tournament for a fifth consecutive season. Ferrarese played all 90 minutes in both games and allowed just two shots on target for the week. In the Diplomats' 9-0 win over Wilson, Ferrarese and the F&M defense held the Phoenix without a shot. It was the first time F&M held their opponent shotless since the Diplomats' 4-0 win over Bryn Mawr in 2017. The junior also recorded two assists in Wednesday's win. Ferrarese followed that performance by limiting Haverford to just seven shot attempts with two on goal in Saturday's win over the Fords.

Offensive Player of the Week

Alycen Radolovic, Sr., OPP/OH, Gettysburg
Willoughby, Ohio | Beaumont School 
Radolovic led the Bullets to a 2-0 week, averaging 3.75 kills per set and hitting .490 on the week. In a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Dickinson on Wednesday, she recorded her first 20-kill performance of the season with 20 kills and hit .567 with just three errors in 30 swings. She also had five digs and a block. In a 3-0 win at Muhlenberg on Saturday, she added 10 kills with just two errors. She also had two blocks and two digs.

Defensive Player of the Week
Mary Huegel, Sr., MH, Gettysburg
Marlboro, N.J. | Colts Neck 
Huegel led the Bullets to a 2-0 week with a huge week at the net. The senior middle averaged 2.25 blocks per set, totaling 18 in just eight sets while also adding 2.63 kills per set. In a 3-2 win over Dickinson on Wednesday, she became the first Bullet player since 2010 to record a double-double with kills and blocks, contributing 15 kills and a career-high 10 total blocks. She also hit .481 in the match with just two errors in 27 attack attempts. In a 3-0 win at Muhlenberg on Saturday, she chipped in another eight blocks to go with six kills. She also added three aces and seven digs on the week.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week
Samson Qu, So., Dickinson
Shanghai, China | YK Pao School 
Qu opened the season on a high note at the Centennial Conference Quad, winning two individual events and finishing third in two relays. Individually, he won both the 50 and 100 freestyles, recording times of 20.74 and 46.97 respectively. His 50 freestyle time ranks fifth in Division III while his 100 freestyle time is 38th. He was also part of the third place 200 medley relay (1:36.77) and was the anchor in the third place 200 freestyle relay (1:26.68) for the Red Devils.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week
Ken Lee, So., Johns Hopkins
Cloverdale, Calif. | Maria Carrillo
Lee helped Johns Hopkins to a 4-0 record at the Centennial Quad in the Blue Jays' conference debut. They swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 57.15 and the 200 in 2:03.30 - 3.43 seconds better than the second place swimmer. Lee also swam on the 200 medley relay team that finished in second in 1:46.39. Lee's 200 backstroke time ranks fifth in Division III after the opening weekend, and their 100 backstroke time is 11th.
