Athletes of the Week: Apr. 8-14

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference action is heating up as the spring regular season comes to a close over the next few weeks. A number of record-breaking performances and repeat honorees highlight this week's conference awards in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and track & field. 

In track & field, Victoria Kadiri of Johns Hopkins broke her own Division III national record while Darya Mikusova of Dickinson set a new CC record. Michael Melnikov of Swarthmore men's tennis and Drew Tyson of Swarthmore men's lacrosse continued their torrid campaigns, with Melnikov earning his second straight and fourth overall weekly honor and Tyson securing weekly accolades for the third week in a row. 
Joey Sangiuolo of Dickinson and Lily Macatee of Gettysburg women's lacrosse collected awards for the second time this spring.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week

Max Beadling, Jr., INF, Swarthmore
San Francisco, Calif. | Berkshire School
Beadling led the Garnet in hitting (.583) and OPS (1.654) over four games, tallying seven hits, four doubles, six walks, three stolen bases, one RBI, and four runs. He recorded a hit in all four contests and reached base at least three times in every game. Beadling hit a double and scored a run in three of the four matchups. He only had four plate appearances with runners on base but reached in three of them.

Pitcher of the Week
Joey Sangiuolo, Sr., RHP, Dickinson
Fairfield, Conn. | Fairfield-Ludlowe
Sangiuolo went 2-0 and did not allow a run or hit in 6.2 frames of relief work last week. On Saturday against 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins, Sangiuolo tossed 3.2 innings with two strikeouts and two walks, capping the 5-4 Red Devil win by getting the final batter of the game to strike out looking. The next day against Muhlenberg, the senior righthander entered a tied game in the bottom of the ninth and helped propel Dickinson to an 11-inning victory with 3.0 innings of work, striking out three and walking none. He currently ranks third in the conference in ERA (2.20).

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week

Jenna Harper, So., Utility, Washington College
Sugar Grove, Ill. | Kaneland
Harper hit .524 (11-for-21) with seven RBIs, nine runs scored, three doubles and a home run in a 5-1 week for the first-place Shorewomen. Harper tallied at least one hit in all six games and posted a .810 slugging percentage and .522 on-base-percentage for an OPS of 1.332. In the second game on Sunday vs. Haverford, an 11-3 five-inning victory, Harper went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs, a home run, double and a sacrifice fly, missing the cycle by a triple. In the opener against the Fords, the sophomore went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and walk. On Saturday in a split at Swarthmore, Harper went 2-for-4 in each game, scoring twice in game two and tallying a run and RBI in a 7-2 game one victory.  In a sweep of McDaniel last Tuesday, she went 1-for-3 with two RBI in a 9-4 second game win versus McDaniel and 1-for-3 in the opener.

Pitcher of the Week
Abby Kohan, So., RHP, Dickinson
Arlington, Va. | Wakefield
Kohan went 2-0 in the circle last week, helping the Red Devils to a 4-1 week including a perfect 4-0 conference record. In Tuesday's 1-0 win over Franklin & Marshall, Kohan hurled a complete-game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and just one walk. She tossed another complete-game on Saturday in a 4-3 win over Haverford, surrendering six hits and three runs (one earned) with five strikeouts and one walk. Kohan fanned 15 over 14 innings throughout the week and accounted for eight putouts and 10 assists on the field.

Offensive Player of the Week
Jack Bill, Fr., M, Muhlenberg
Bloomsbury, N.J. | Delaware Valley Regional
Bill recorded six goals and an assist as Muhlenberg picked up a pair of Centennial Conference road wins against Ursinus and Gettysburg to extend its winning streak to four and move into a tie for third in the CC. He notched a pair of goals and an assist in a 10-8 win at Ursinus and added four, including the game-winner 40 seconds into overtime, in a 12-11 upset of 15th-ranked Gettysburg. Bill scored his six goals on only 12 shots.

Defensive Player of the Week
Drew Tyson, So., GK, Swarthmore 
Santa Ana, Calif. | Foothill 
Tyson earned CC Defensive Player of the Week for the third straight week after helping the 11th-ranked Garnet remain unbeaten in the Centennial with a pair of wins. He posted an 8.95 goals against average, a .605 save percentage, and 26 saves over the two contests. Tyson stopped two-thirds of the shots he faced and allowed just six goals while making 12 saves in an 18-7 win at Washington. He then wrapped up the week with 14 saves and a .560 save percentage to help Swarthmore upset No. 5 Dickinson, 12-11. Tyson has registered double-digit saves in eight straight games and is 10th in Division III in save percentage.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Jordan Basso, Sr., A, Gettysburg
Rye, N.Y. | Rye 
Basso broke the Gettysburg all-time scoring record, helping lead the Bullets to a pair of ranked wins in the process. The senior registered two goals and nine assists in the two games. In a 12-2 win over No. 13 Stevens on Tuesday, she scored two goals and added four assists - the last of which came on a pass to freshman Meghan Crane with 6:43 remaining in the contest - to finish with 310 career points and pass Julika Blankenship's 2001-04 record. With five helpers in a 16-5 win over No. 23 Haverford on Saturday, she increased her total to 315 points. She also added four ground balls and two caused turnovers on the week.

Defensive Player of the Week
Lily Macatee, Jr., D, Gettysburg
Street, Md. | North Harford 
Macatee led the Bullets' defense in a stout week. The unit allowed just seven goals in the two games against nationally-ranked foes that included a stretch of 70 minutes, 50 seconds without surrendering a goal, including holding No. 13 Stevens off the board for the final three quarters. Macatee recorded her first collegiate point on Tuesday with an assist in addition to 11 draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers on the week.

MEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
Michael Melnikov, So., Swarthmore 
Karlsruhe, Germany 
Melnikov repeated as Player of the Week after going 4-0 as No. 10 Swarthmore defeated No. 38 Haverford College and No. 40 Christopher Newport. Melnikov teamed with Utham Koduri for a pair of top doubles wins. The Garnet duo took down Haverford, 8-2, and Christopher Newport, 8-3. The sophomore also went unbeaten in top singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Fords and a 6-0, 6-1 victory over the Captains.

WOMEN'S TENNIS 

Athlete of the Week
Samantha Wang, Fr., Johns Hopkins 
El Monte, Calif. | Arcadia 
Wang went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to help Johns Hopkins to a 3-0 week. She lost a total of just four games in her three matches. On Wednesday at Bryn Mawr, she paired with Sophia Kim for an 8-1 win at number one doubles. Wang then won without losing a game, and clinched the Blue Jay victory over the Owls, at number two singles. She followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number four singles and clinched the win for JHU at Haverford on Saturday.

Track Athlete of the Week
Trevor Richwine, So., Dickinson
Newville, Pa. | Big Spring
Richwine recorded the third-fastest 800 meter time in Centennial history and the fifth-fastest time in the nation and at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic over the weekend. Richwine's time of 1:50.02 set a new Dickinson school record and was the fastest among DIII competitors at the meet. His time reset the DC school mark by over two seconds, with the previous time of 1:52.39 being held by Mason Hepner since 2017. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Justin Kolpan, Fr., Franklin & Marshall 
Pittstown, N.J. | Delaware Valley Regional 
Kolpan set a new Franklin & Marshall school record in the javelin at West Chester's Bill Butler Invitational. Kolpan's mark of 59.22 meters won the event while also breaking the previous F&M record set by Tanner Erisman during the 2018 season. That mark currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference this spring and is 17th in all of Division III.

Track Athlete of the Week
Darya Mikusova, Sr., Dickinson
Niantic, Conn. | East Lyme 
Mikusova repeated as Track Athlete of the Week after setting Centennial and school records in the 400 hurdles at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic. Mikusova's time of 1:00.49 bested the previous CC mark of 1:00.83 set by Johns Hopkins' Megan McDonald in 2014. The previous Dickinson record of 1:01.99 had stood since 2002, held by Christine Hufenbecher. She now ranks third in all of Division III for the event.

Field Athlete of the Week
Victoria Kadiri, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Lynn, Mass. | Phillips Academy 
Kadiri put together a historic weekend at the Bison Outdoor Classic, breaking her own national record in the triple jump while also setting a pair of personal-best marks en route to a pentathlon victory. In second with one attempt left in the triple jump, the senior cleared an other-worldly 13.43 meters to topple the national record she set herself last season. The mark is the best in Division III, Centennial Conference and Johns Hopkins history and ranks in the top five across all divisions.
