Athletes of the Week: Sept. 15-21

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Sept. 15-21 in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. 

Megan McClure of Dickinson field hockey and Dahlia Bedward of Swarthmore women's soccer lead this week's honorees as two-time selections just a month into the fall campaign.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Simon Lane, Fr., Haverford
Chicago, Ill. | University of Chicago Laboratory Schools
Lane led the way for the Fords at the four-mile Main Line Invitational at Haverford, finishing in 19:54.4 to place eighth overall. Lane was the top Division III finisher in the race, edging out a pair of charging Penn runners in an impressive performance. The Fords put forth a strong showing on their home course, outpacing Division II No. 22 Shippensburg as well as Division I Lehigh and NJIT, along with Division III foes Widener and Muhlenberg.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Mia Sideris, Sr., Ursinus
Philadelphia, Pa. | Northeast
Sideris recorded a career best 6k time at the highly-competitive Wesleyan Cardinal Invitational on Saturday morning, taking 12th place in a field of 100 runners. Sideris crossed the line at 22:14.61 in a field that included three nationally-ranked and five regionally-ranked programs.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Megan McClure, Jr., F, Dickinson

Levittown, Pa. | Pennsbury
McClure earned Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the 25th-ranked Red Devils to a 2-0 week with four goals in victories over 10th-ranked Shenandoah and DeSales. In Wednesday's 5-1 win over the 10th-ranked Hornets, McClure scored in the 33rd and 36th minutes as the Red Devils scored thrice in just a three-minute span to break open the game. Her first goal eventually proved to be the game-winner. She then closed out the week with two goals on just two shots in a 5-0 shutout win over DeSales. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Natalie Slusser, Sr., D, Dickinson
Fleetwood, Pa. | Fleetwood Area
Slusser helped the 25th-ranked Red Devils to a pair of non-conference wins during the week. In Wednesday's 5-1 win over 10th-ranked Shenandoah, she spearheaded a defensive unit that allowed just six shots (two on goal). She also contributed the assist on the eventual game-winning goal. She wrapped up with week by leading a Dickinson backline that surrendered just three shots (one on goal) to DeSales in a 5-0 shutout victory.

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Saul Iwowo, Sr., F, Dickinson
London, United Kingdom | Brooks School
Iwowo scored the game-winning goal in both games of a 2-0 week for the 10th-ranked Red Devils. He opened the week with the game's only tally in a 1-0 road triumph over Shenandoah. In the conference opener at Ursinus on Saturday, Iwowo scored in the 36th-minute of a 4-1 victory over the Bears. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Grayson Benson, So., GK, Haverford
Timonium, Md. | St. Paul's School 
Benson helped guide Haverford to a 1-0-1 week with nine saves in 180 scoreless minutes between the posts. In a 2-0 upset win over second-ranked Rowan, Benson denied the only three shots he faced. The sophomore followed up that performance by recording a season-high six saves in the Centennial Conference opener against Gettysburg, playing a big role in a 0-0 tie. Those two results extended Benson's shutout streak to four, and he now sits atop the CC in shutouts with five.

Offensive Player of the Week

Wayne, Pa. | Radnor 
Daiutolo led the Bullets to a 1-0-1 week, including a 1-0 win over Haverford in the conference opener on Saturday. She scored two of Gettysburg's three goals and extended her goal-scoring streak to five straight games.

Defensive Player of the Week
Dahlia Bedward, Sr., GK, Swarthmore 
Columbia, Md. | Altholton
Bedward earned weekly honors for the second time this season after making a career-high 11 saves in goal to help the 21st-ranked Garnet defeat 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins on the road, 2-1. The senior helped Swarthmore escape with the win despite being outshot by a 22-5 count. It was the first double-digit save performance of Bedward's career.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Mallie Thomas, So., OH/RS, Dickinson
Jackson, Miss. | Saint Andrew's Episcopal
Thomas averaged 5.10 kills and 3.70 digs per set while hitting .333% in a 3-0 week for the Red Devils that featured wins over Susquehanna, Mount Aloysius and Catholic. She opened the week with 18 kills, 11 digs and one ace with a week-best .417% hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep of Susquehanna. Thomas then racked up 12 kills, 11 digs, one ace and one block in a 3-0 win over Mount Aloysius. She closed out the week with her third 20-plus kill match of the season, recording 21 kills and a season-high 15 digs in a four-set triumph.

Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Allison McKechnie, Sr., S, Washington College 
Coronado, Calif. | Jserra Catholic 
McKechnie averaged 2.58 kills, 4.58 assists,1.08 service aces and 2.00 digs per set while hitting .296% in a 3-0 week for the Shorewomen. The senior notched a quadruple-double in a four-set win at Neumann on Wednesday with 10 kills (hitting .320), 18 assists, a career-best 12 aces in addition to adding 11 digs. Her 12 service aces in the four-set win over Neumann set a new conference record, with the previous record being nine. McKechnie followed up that performance with a triple-double in a five-set victory over Rutgers-Camden, posting 13 kills to match her personal best in addition to 24 assists and 12 digs. In the three-set sweep of Lebanon Valley, McKechnie hit .300 on eight finishers with 11 assists.

Defensive Player of the Week
Nicole Tuszynski, So., Libero, Johns Hopkins 
Orinda, Calif. | Miramonte
Tuszynski played a key role in helping the Blue Jays go undefeated (3-0) at the Wid Guisler Invitational, improving their season record to 10-2. The libero was instrumental in the team’s win over defending national champions and fourth-ranked Juniata, as well as sweeps over Nazareth and Christopher Newport. Over 10 sets, she recorded a .907 reception percentage and totaled 50 digs (5.00 per set). In the win over Juniata, the sophomore anchored the back row with a match-high 23 digs, including a clutch service ace to seal the victory for Hopkins. She also led all players with 15 digs in the match against Christopher Newport.
