Athletes of the Week: March 23-29

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of March 23-29 in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. 

Abby Burkholder of Ursinus women's lacrosse earned weekly accolades for the second time this spring and Oliver Stroka of Dickinson men's track & field was honored for the second week in a row, while Jackson Sgro of Haverford baseball tied a Centennial Conference and NCAA Division III record.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Jackson Sgro, So., INF, Haverford 
Hopewell, N.J. | Lawrenceville / Peddie School 
Sgro hit .444 (8-for-18) while posting a 1.222 slugging percentage and a .542 on-base percentage, to go along with nine runs scored, 13 RBIs, four home runs (including two grand slams), two doubles, three walks, and one stolen base last week for the Fords. Sgro opened the week with a historic performance in a 25-9 win over Lebanon Valley on Monday, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, nine RBIs, and three home runs, including two grand slams, while also drawing a walk and adding a stolen base. The Hopewell, N.J., native tied both the Centennial Conference and NCAA Division III records with two grand slams in a single game. He followed that effort at Widener on Tuesday, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double, while also drawing a walk. Sgro then closed the week with a strong showing in a doubleheader split against McDaniel on Saturday. In game one, he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, four RBIs, a double, and a home run.

Pitcher of the Week
Dan Bass, Sr., RHP, Ursinus
Berkeley Heights, N.J. | Governor Livingston
Bass made two appearances on the mound this week for Ursinus, combining to pitch 8.2 innings, scattering three hits and one unearned run, striking out seven and holding opponents to just a .107 batting average. Bass came out of the bullpen for the Bears on Wednesday, pitching 1.2 shutout innings against No. 7 Salisbury and striking out a batter. Against Washington College on Saturday, Bass pitched seven innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out six batters and scattering two hits to lead Ursinus to a 12-1 victory. Bass hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 16.2 innings pitched.

SOFTBALL    

Player of the Week
Avery McClure, Sr., INF, Swarthmore 
Bolivar, Mo. | Bolivar 
McClure batted .500 (6-for-12) with a 1.538 OPS in a 3-1 week for the Garnet. She totaled two home runs, four RBIs, a walk, and four runs. The senior recorded a hit in all four contests while both driving in and scoring a run in three of them. McClure opened the week by going 3-for-7 at the plate with one RBI and one run in a doubleheader split at Neumann. She then went 3-for-5 with two homers, a walk, three RBIs, and three runs in a conference-opening sweep of Muhlenberg. Her two-run homer in the fourth proved to be the difference in game one in a 3-1 victory. McClure had the crucial hit again in the nightcap, blasting a go-ahead solo shot in the fifth in a 2-1 triumph. They were the first career long-balls for the senior.

Pitcher of the Week
Lilly Goldberg, So., RHP, Swarthmore
Pittsford, N.Y. | Pittsford Mendon 
Goldberg won both of her starts during the week, posting a 1.08 ERA. She conceded just two earned runs, struck out seven in 13.0 innings, and allowed opposing batters to hit just .186 against her. The sophomore opened the week by going six innings and allowing two runs, one earned, and two hits in a victory at Neumann. Goldberg fanned six in the 7-2 win. She then tossed a complete game in the conference-opening doubleheader with Muhlenberg, giving up just one run in a 3-1 triumph.

MEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week
Peyton Gestole, Jr., A, Washington College 
Sudlersville, Md. | Queen Anne's County
Gestole totaled six goals and six assists for 12 points in a 2-0 week for the Shoremen, who are 3-0 in Centennial play for the first time in 11 years. In Wednesday's 15-9 win at Ursinus, the junior led all players with five goals and eight points and tied for tops in the contest in assists with three. He factored in five of WC's 10 first half goals with two goals and three helpers and in the second half, scored three of the team's five tallies. In Saturday's 14-9 triumph at Franklin & Marshall, the attackman handed out three assists, including helpers on the sixth goal in the first quarter that capped a six-goal run by WC and on the game-winning score which gave Washington a 10-6 advantage with 52 ticks to go before halftime.

Defensive Player of the Week
Hayden Warren, Jr., D, Dickinson
Severna Park, Md. | Calvert Hall 
Warren led the Red Devil defensive unit to conference victories over McDaniel and Swarthmore, limiting opponents to an average of just 4.5 goals per game. In a 15-2 home win over the Green Terror on Wednesday, the junior posted five caused turnovers and six ground balls to go along with a pair of assists. On Saturdayat Swarthmore, hhe added two more ground balls and caused one more turnover in the 10-7 triumph.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week
Aubree Daugherty, Sr., A, Swarthmore 
Chagrin Falls, Ohio | Chagrin Falls 
Daugherty led the Garnet to a pair of victories, tallying 15 points on nine goals and six assists while also picking up four ground balls over the two contests. The senior opened the week with five goals, one assist, and four ground balls in a 20-5 win over DeSales. Daugherty then had a career day at Washington, posting a career-best nine points on four goals and five assists. Her effort contributed to Swarthmore's comeback from an 8-3 deficit in a 17-9 victory. The win was the Garnet's first in Chestertown since 2006 and Swarthmore has won back-to-back games in the series for the first time since 2007.

Defensive Player of the Week

Burkholder led the Bears defense with nine ground balls and six caused turnovers leading Ursinus to a perfect 2-0 week in victories over Widener University and Dickinson College. Against Widener on Wednesday, Burkholder tallied a career-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers to lead Ursinus to a comeback 14-8 victory. On Saturday,, Burkholder tallied three ground balls and a caused turnover in the Bears' 9-5 victory over the Red Devils on the road. She helped the Bears allow a total of 13 shots on goal, including just four in the first half and seven through the first three quarters.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Max Lindstrom, Sr., Swarthmore 
Satellite Beach, Fla. | Satellite 
Lindstrom went 3-1 over a pair of Garnet victories, winning both singles matches. He lost at third doubles but bounced back for a 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) triumph at second singles in a 6-1 conference win at Franklin and Marshall. The senior then rolled to a 6-1 victory at third doubles with Winston Zhang before earning a come-from-behind 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4 win at second singles in a 5-2 triumph against No. 19 Mary Washington.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Merve Uyumazturk, Fr., Dickinson 
McLean, Va. | National Cathedral School 
Uyumazturk had a memorable Centennial Conference debut on Saturday against Washington College in Chestertown. First, she and her doubles partner Jenna Crain secured the doubles point for Dickinson with a 7-5 win at the first flight over Eva Kading and Soleil Namunyola. Then, with the outcome of the match coming down to her and Kading at No. 4 singles, she took the first 6-4, before claiming the second 7-6 in a 7-4 tiebreaker to give Dickinson a 4-3 victory.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Emmanuel Leblond, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Mountain View, Calif. | Mountain View 
Leblond capped the Raleigh Relays with an impressive showing in the 10,000 meters, placing 42nd with a personal-best time of 29:45.03. Competing in a field of 130 runners dominated by Division I talent, Leblond was the top Division III finisher. His performance ranks second all-time in program history, fourth all-time in Centennial history and is the eighth-fastest 10,000-meter time in Division III this season. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Oliver Stroka, So., Dickinson
Goshen, N.Y. | Don Bosco Prep 
Stroka repeated as Field Athlete of the Week after breaking his own Dickinson record in the hammer throw for the second week in a row at the Little 3 Meet. Stroka delivered a 52.98m toss in the hammer to win the event. That mark reset his own school record, ranks seventh all-time in Centennial history and 26th in Division III this season. Stroka also placed seventh in the discus (34.90m) and 13th in the shot put (9.45m).

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD 

Track Athlete of the Week

Mackenzie Setton, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Jericho, N.Y. | Jericho 
Setton kicked off her senior outdoor campaign in impressive fashion at the Raleigh Relays, clocking a personal-best 4:27.20 in the 1,500 meters. She placed 79th overall in a highly-competitive field of 227 athletes dominated by Division I talent and was the first Division III runner to cross the line. Her time ranks third-fastest in program history, fifth-fastest in Centennial history and ranks fourth on the Division III performance list this season.

Field Athlete of the Week
Lydia Morris-Klement, Jr., Swarthmore 
Needham, Mass. | Winsor School 
Morris-Kliment recorded the best mark in the conference this season in the discus, posting a toss of 41.60 meters for second place at the Danny Curran Invitational. She hit the distance on her third attempt. The mark also ranks 20th in Division III.
