Athletes of the Week: Oct. 9-15

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of Oct. 9-15 in cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. This week marks the final weekly awards for cross country, with the CC championship set for Saturday, Oct. 28 at McDaniel. 

Sara Stephenson of Johns Hopkins women's cross country leads this week's group of winners with her fourth weekly honor of the fall, while Oscar Horwitz of Franklin & Marshall men's soccer and Kylie Ulrich of Gettysburg volleyball also became multi-time award recipients.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Gavin McElhennon, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Washington, D.C. | Gonzaga College High
McElhennon put together his strongest outing of the season en route to a seventh-place finish at Saturday's Mike Woods Invitational. The senior shaved over one minute off of his previous season-best 8K time, crossing the line in 24:07.9 to help lead the team to a third-place finish.

Athlete of the Week

Weston, Mass. | The Rivers School 
Stephenson put together another impressive weekend at Saturday's Mike Woods Invitational, finishing as the runner-up in the 6K by just 1.1 seconds. The graduate student crossed the line in 20:48.9 to set a new season-best time, leading her team to a fourth-place finish in a stacked field that included fourth-ranked SUNY Geneseo and sixth-ranked Carleton.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Ava Balacek, Jr., M, Johns Hopkins 

Manhasset, NY | Manhasset
Balacek totaled two goals and two assists to lead Johns Hopkins to wins over Washington College and Bryn Mawr last week. She assisted on the game-winner and then added an insurance goal in the win over the Shorewomen Wednesday night. Balacek then scored the game-tying goal and then assisted on the game-winner with 1:55 to play in the come-from-behind win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Meghan Dole, Fr., GK, Franklin & Marshall
Wayne, Pa. | Radnor 
Dole helped the Diplomats to a 2-0 week with a .944 save percentage and 0.50 goals against average in wins over 18th-ranked Ursinus and Haverford. The freshman goalkeeper opened the week with 15 saves in a 2-1 penalty shootout victory over Ursinus. Dole stopped two of the three penalty shootout attempts by the Bears. Dole then helped F&M register its seventh shutout of the season with two saves in a 4-0 victory against Haverford.

Offensive Player of the Week
Oscar Horwitz, Sr., F, Franklin & Marshall

Horwitz scored six times in a 2-0 week for the Diplomats. The senior opened the week with a pair of goals in a 3-1 win over Lancaster Bible on Monday, before turning in a dominant performance in F&M's 4-3 win over Johns Hopkins on Saturday evening. Horwitz scored all four of the Diplomats goals vs. JHU, with three coming within the first 35 minutes of the match. The senior's fourth goal improved his tally to 18 on the season, which breaks the program single-season goals record that was previously held by Mark Micolucci '87 with 17 in the 1986 season. Horwitz also tied both the F&M record for most goals in a single game and the program single-season record for game-winning goals (seven). Horwitz has now scored multiple goals in each of his last three games.

Defensive Player of the Week
Christian Bignotti, Jr., GK, Swarthmore 
Santiago, Chile | Williston Northhampton
Bignotti combined for 10 saves and allowed two goals in a pair of 2-1 victories over Misericordia and Dickinson. The junior made a season-high six saves against Misericordia and four saves against Dickinson, tallying a .833 save percentage in 180 minutes of work between the pipes.

Gaston dished out a pair of assists in a 1-0-1 week for the Blue Jays. The sophomore began the week by assisting on Katie Sullivan's goal in a 1-1 draw against Swarthmore in a matchup of the top two teams in the Centennial standings. In a 1-0 win over F&M, Gaston assisted on Lilah Isenberg's game-winner in the 15th minute of play. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Lila Travers, So., GK, Swarthmore
Ithaca, N.Y. | Ithaca 
Travers was excellent as she combined for 16 saves in two games last week. The sophomore opened the week with a career-best 11 saves in a 1-1 draw against No. 8 Johns Hopkins. Travers made several remarkable stops to force a draw against the nationally-ranked Blue Jays. She then recorded her third shutout of the season with five saves versus Dickinson.

Offensive Player of the Week

Kylie Ulrich, Sr., OH, Gettysburg

Ulrich led the Bullets to a pair of key conference wins on the week. She averaged 3.50 kills over eight sets and hit .250. She knocked down 16 kills in a 3-1 win at Franklin & Marshall and 12 in a 3-1 win at Swarthmore. She also had four total blocks on the week.

Defensive Player of the Week
Mary Huegel, So., MH, Gettysburg 
Marlboro, N.J. | Colts Neck 
Huegel led the Bullets to a 2-0 week in two key conference matches. She averaged 1.38 blocks per set, knocking down 11 total blocks in a pair of 3-1 wins. In the win over Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, she had six block assists to go with five kills. On Saturday at Swarthmore, she tallied five blocks to go with nine kills. She hit .273 on the week with 14 kills and three aces.
