Athletes of the Week: Oct. 14-20

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly honors have been announced for the week of Oct. 14-20, 2024. Fall sport competition continues to progress towards the playoffs with just a few weeks of the regular season remaining in field hockey, soccer and volleyball. This week also marked the first winter sport awards of the year, with swimming opening up the year this past weekend. 

This week's awards features the final cross country awards of the year as the majority of teams will take next week off in preparation for the CC cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Big Spring High School, hosted by Dickinson. 

Emmanuel Leblond of Johns Hopkins men's cross country leads this week's group of award recipients as a four-time honoree this fall. Will Sangpachatanaruk of Johns Hopkins men's soccer and Alexia Enache of Swarthmore volleyball both secured their second weekly awards this fall, with Enache earning the accolade in back-to-back weeks.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Emmanuel Leblond, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Mountain View, Calif. | Mountain View
Leblond earned his second win of the season at the Rowan Border Battle Saturday morning to lead the Blue Jays to a third-place team finish. The junior was the only runner in a field of over 275 competitors to finish the 8K Championship in under 24 minutes, crossing the line more than 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up with a time of 23:52.9.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Athlete of the Week
Adriana Catalano, Jr., Johns Hopkins
Pleasantville, N.Y. | Pleasantville 
Catalano secured her first win of the season at Saturday's Rowan Border Battle to help lead Hopkins to a convincing first-place team finish. The junior passed a pair of teammates in the final 1.75 kilometers to finish with a season-best time of 21:25.8 and take the top spot in a field of over 250 runners.

Offensive Player of the Week
Gigi Testa, Jr., M, Ursinus 

Moorestown, N.J. | Moorestown
Testa sparked the Bears offense to a perfect 2-0 week in key Centennial victories over Franklin & Marshall and Gettysburg. On Wednesday, she provided the game-winning goal in the third period extending the Bears advantage to two goals as Ursinus earned a 2-1 victory. On Saturday versus Gettysburg, Testa assisted on the Bears second goal, before her score in the third extended the Ursinus lead to 4-0 enroute to the shutout victory. She has currently scored in each of the last three games for Ursinus. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Adriana Palladinetti, Jr. GK, Ursinus
Wilmington, Del. | Delaware Military Academy 
Palladinetti notched a .857 save percentage and allowed just one goal in a perfect 2-0 week for the Bears. During a 2-1 road victory over Franklin & Marshall, Palladinetti tallied each of her three saves in the second half to halt the Diplomat offense en route to the victory. Against Gettysburg on Saturday, she collected her second shutout of the season, adding three saves, and leading Ursinus to a 5-0 victory. She currently ranks second in the conference with a save percentage of .800.

Wexford, Pa. | Pine-Richland 
Sangpachatanaruk had a hand in both of Johns Hopkins' goals in a 2-1 win over 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the Blue Jays' only game of the week. He notched an assist on the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Sangpachatanaruk then scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute.

Chandler, Ariz. | Chandler 
Turner made a career-best nine saves in Johns Hopkins' 2-1 win over 13th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday in the Blue Jays' only game of the week. Three of his nine saves came after JHU took the lead in the 72nd minute, including one with 40 seconds remaining to preserve the win.

Colleen Ferrarese, So., D, Franklin & Marshall 
Bel Air, Md. | Maryvale Prep
Ferrarese scored the game-winning goal in F&M's 1-0 win over No. 8 Johns Hopkins on Saturday. Ferrarese dribbled past the defense and buried her first goal of the season under the crossbar during the 38th minute to upset the first-place Blue Jays in Baltimore.

Defensive Player of the Week
Lucy Fleming, So., GK, Franklin & Marshall 
Princeton, N.J. | Hopewell Valley Central 
Fleming made 13 total saves last week, including a huge performance in the Diplomats' 1-0 win over No. 8 Johns Hopkins. In the 1-0 loss against Dickinson, Fleming batted away six of the Red Devils' shots to keep F&M within striking distance. The sophomore then had a huge game in F&M's upset-victory over Johns Hopkins, making seven saves in the final 45 minutes of the contest to keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard. For the week, Fleming notched a .929 save percentage and .500 goals against average.

Offensive Player of the Week

Alexia Enache, So., OH, Swarthmore 
Campbell, Calif. | Branham 
Enache repeated as Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Garnet to a 2-0 week, racking up 32 kills, five service aces, 17 digs, and 37.5 points over the two contests. She recorded 14 more kills than the next-closest player on the squad and at a rate of 4.57 per set. Enache produced a match-high 17 kills and eight digs while hitting .302 in a 3-0 victory at DeSales. She led all players again with 15 kills to go along with a career-best five service aces and nine digs in a 3-1 win at Gettysburg as Swarthmore remained unbeaten in conference play. Enache has registered double-digit kills in 12 of her 19 matches this season and leads the conference in points per set.

Defensive Player of the Week
Avery Grantham, Fr., MB, Franklin & Marshall 
Raleigh, N.C. | Millbrook 
Grantham had a huge week at the net with 10 blocks (three solo, seven assisted) during a 2-0 week for the Diplomats, who continue to receive votes in the AVCA national polls with their 17-3 (5-0 CC) record. In a sweep over DeSales, Grantham had nine blocks to match her season best, which is also the third-highest single match total in program history. She also contributed five digs, 10 kills, and four service aces in helping a number of facets as the Diplomats also swept Gettysburg last Wednesday during a key conference battle. For the week, Grantham averaged 1.67 blocks per set.

Birmingham, Mich. | International Academy 
Wilson recorded two times that rank among the top five in the nation over the season's opening weekend at the Centennial quad meet hosted by Gettysburg. The junior was a member of both first-place relays for the Garnet and also earned top finishes in the 50 freestyle (20.80) and 100 butterfly (49.37). Wilson currently ranks third on the Division III national list in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 50 freestyle.

Athlete of the Week
Sophie Rotival, Sr., Swarthmore 
Seattle, Wash. | The Bush School 
Rotival combined for three wins at the Centennial quad hosted by Gettysburg on Saturday. The senior won the 100 (1:04.97) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.58) and also helped the 200 medley relay to a top finish. Rotival ranks second in the country in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in 200 breaststroke following the opening weekend of the season. The Garnet 200 medley team's time of 1:41.22 ranks seventh nationally.
