Athletes of the Week: March 24-30

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference play has now commenced in all spring sports as we now flip the calendar to April. Weekly honors have been awarded in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. 

Teddy Scarborough of Franklin & Marshall men's lacrosse earned weekly honors for the second time in the past three weeks to lead this week's group of honorees.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Brendan Hughes, Sr., 1B, Muhlenberg
Park Ridge, N.J. | Park Ridge 
Hughes hit .692 (9-for-13) with five extra-base hits, six RBIs, a 1.308 slugging percentage and a 2.000 OPS in a 2-1 week for the Mules. He recorded four-hit games against Rosemont and nationally-ranked Gettysburg, hitting a game-winning two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh in the second game of the Gettysburg doubleheader. Hughes added a triple and two singles in that game, missing the cycle by a double, but hit three doubles in the other two games of the week. Hughes also pitched into the sixth inning against the Bullets, allowing only two earned runs against the top-scoring team in the CC. 

Pitcher of the Week
Drew Grumbles, So., RHP, Johns Hopkins 
Maumelle, Ark. | Episcopal Collegiate School
Grumbles led Hopkins to a shutout victory over Catholic, 9-0, moving to 4-0 on the season. The sophomore hurled 7.1 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out 10 to pick up the victory against the Cardinals. He allowed just two base runners through six innings – one of which reached on an error and another on a hit by pitch – and didn't allow a hit until an infield single in the seventh.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week
Renee Laczkowski, Fr., 3B, Gettysburg 
Erie, Colo. | Erie 
Laczkowski led the Bullets to a 4-0 week, hitting .692 on the week. She rapped out nine hits, recording multiple hits in each of the four games. She also had two doubles for an .846 slugging percentage and had a 1.560 OPS for the week. She drove in three runs and scored four times in the four games.

Pitcher of the Week
Lia Fong, Fr., RHP, Swarthmore 
Merrick, N.Y. | John F. Kennedy 
Fong did not allow a run and conceded just two hits in 9.0 innings of work over a pair of appearances. The rookie hurled a complete-game, one-hit shutout against Neumann, striking out nine and walking none. Fong allowed just the one baserunner and struck out eight consecutive hitters at one point, retiring the last 19 batters she faced. Fong finished the week with two scoreless innings of work at Muhlenberg.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Landen Hyatt, Jr., M, Dickinson 
Tracy's Landing, Md. | St. John's College 
Hyatt tallied 10 points with nine goals and one assists in Centennial victories over McDaniel and No. 13 Swarthmore last week. He opened the week with five goals and an assist in a 15-5 triumph over McDaniel, including a hat trick in Dickinson's seven-goal first quarter. He followed that up with four goals, including what amounted to the game-winner with 9:45 remaining in the fourth, in a key 11-9 win over the nationally-ranked Garnet. For the week, he racked up nine goals on 23 shots (12 on goal) with one assist and one ground ball.

Defensive Player of the Week
Teddy Scarborough, So., GK, Franklin & Marshall 
Owings Mills, Md. | McDonough School
Scarborough made 30 saves and allowed just 15 goals for a 66.7 save percentage to help Franklin & Marshall move to 3-0 in the Centennial Conference with wins against Haverford and Washington College. He made 15 saves during both of the Diplomats' conference victories, including three huge stops during the double overtime win versus the Shoremen before F&M scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period. The Diplomats are currently riding an eight-game winning streak with Scarborough allowing just 6.52 goals per game during the 2025 season.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Piper Evans, Jr., A, Washington College 
Chestertown, Md. | Queen Anne's County 
Evans tallied eight goals and added two assists in two games this past week for the Shorewomen. The junior scored four goals in the team's 12-11 win over Christopher Newport, including the goal that put Washington ahead for good at 9-8 with 3:30 left in the third and the eventual game-winning score with 2:56 left in the fourth to make it 12-9. On Saturday at Swarthmore, the junior led all players with a career-high six points on four goals and two assists.

Defensive Player of the Week
Emma Hickey, Jr., D, Swarthmore 
Kensington, Md. | Stone Ridge School 
Hickey played an essential role in a 2-0 week for the Garnet. The junior defender shutdown Washington College's leading goal scorer and one the second-leading goal-scorer in the conference, holding her to no goals and one assist, in a 12-11 victory. Swarthmore defeated the Shorewomen for the first time since 2011. Swarthmore also topped Kalamazoo 19-6 earlier in the week. Hickey tallied four draw controls, one caused turnover and one ground ball on the week.

Player of the Week

Satellite Beach, Fla. | Satellite 
Lindstrom went 2-0 to help the 8th-ranked Garnet shut out No. 40 Franklin and Marshall. He teamed with Winston Zhang for a 6-4 victory at third doubles. Lindstrom then dispatched his opponent at first singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Williams went 2-0 to help the 18th-ranked Garnet win their Centennial opener versus Franklin and Marshall. She paired with Lola Diaz for a 6-2 victory at first doubles. Williams then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top singles spot.

Track Athlete of the Week
Atticus Hempel, Sr., Swarthmore 
Storrs, Conn. | E.O. Smith
Hempel set a new program record in the 5000 meters at the Danny Curran Invitational, running 14:37.93 to finish in third place. He surpassed the longstanding record of 14:40.77, set by Garnet Hall of Famer Marc Jeuland in 2001. Hempel's time currently ranks 14th on the Division III performance list. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Jayden McKeen, So., Ursinus 
Coal Twp, Pa. | Shamokin Area 
McKeen delivered the third-best javelin throw in NCAA Division III this season and the third-best mark in Centennial history on Saturday at the Danny Curran Invitational hosted by Widener. An All-American last season, McKeen registered a mark of 65.76 meters to win the event and easily blitz his previous best of 62.20 meters set at the same spot last April. His mark ranks atop the Centennial Conference and Metro Region.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Annie Huang, Gr., Johns Hopkins 
Austin, Texas | Westlake 
Huang opened the season crushing her former personal-best in the 800 meters, shaving off just under two seconds, clocking a 2:08.63 at the Raleigh Relays. Her time is the fastest time in Division III this season, running just under four seconds faster than the next best time (2:12.52), and the third-fastest time in both Centennial and program history.

Field Athlete of the Week
Erika Ezumba, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Owings Mills, Md. | Notre Dame Preparatory 
Ezumba opened the season breaking her own school record in the hammer throw by over four meters at the Navy Outdoor Invitational. Her throw of 47.38 meters was good for second place and bested her own record of 42.70. The junior's throw is also good for the fifth best in the nation this year and ranks fourth all-time in Centennial outdoor history.
