Athletes of the Week: Feb. 17-23

LANCASTER, Pa. -- This week marks the final weekly awards of the season for basketball and indoor track & field, with Centennial championship set to be crowned in those sports this week. This is also the first week of awards of the 2025 season for baseball, with weekly honors also distributed in lacrosse and tennis. 

Giovanni Rubino of Muhlenberg basketball captured his third CC honor of the season, while Kaitlyn Boggs of Washington College women's basketball, Trevor Richwine of Dickinson men's track & field and Isabella Sorhegui of Washington College women's tennis collected their second accolade of their respective seasons.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Giovanni Rubino, Sr., G, Muhlenberg
Pequannock, N.J. |  Cheshire Academy (Conn.)
Rubino wrote a Hollywood ending to his storied career, scoring 43 points and making the game-winning basket with 0.5 seconds left in the Mules' season-ending 82-81 win at McDaniel. The 43 points were one short of the school record, the most scored by a Muhlenberg player in a regulation game since 1971, and tied for the fifth most in Centennial Conference history. For the week, Rubino shot 56% (19-for-34) from the floor, 62% (8-for-13) from three-point land and a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line, averaging 31 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in wins over the Green Terror and playoff-bound Ursinus.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Boggs, Jr., C, Washington College
Linwood, N.J. | Mainland Regional
Boggs averaged 21.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.5 steals per game in a 2-0 week as the Shorewomen secured their fourth straight trip to the Centennial Conference Tournament. On Saturday in a 56-50 win over visiting Ursinus, Boggs tallied game-bests of 23 points and five blocks, while tying for team-high in rebounds (9) and four steals as Washington College clinched a home game in the first round of the CC tournament. In a 59-41 victory at Haverford on Wednesday, the junior scored a game-best 20 points and pulled down nine boards.

Track Athlete of the Week
Trevor Richwine, Jr., Dickinson 
Newville, Pa. | Big Spring
Richwine raced to a time of 1:52.48 in the 800 meters at the Penn State Tune-Up last Friday. He took 10th place in the event as the only Division III competitor in a field full of Division I and Division II runners. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Chase Shaneman, Sr., Ursinus 
Honey Brook, Pa. | Twin Valley 
Shaneman won the weight throw at the Keogh Invitational on Friday afternoon with his season best throw of 15.47 meters. It is the second best throw in the Centennial Conference this indoor season. He followed that with an 11.52 meter shot put throw that placed him eighth overall.

Track Athlete of the Week
Lauren Dunnigan, So., Franklin & Marshall 
Waldwick, N.J. |  Immaculate Heart Academy
Dunnigan broke her own school record in the 60 hurdles at the Marc Deneault Invitational at Cornell. Dunnigan's time of 8.98 seconds ranks sixth all-time in Centennial history and 34th in the Division III this season. 

Field Athlete of the Week

Washington, D.C. | Mercersburg Academy 
Leder won both the long jump and triple jump at the SU Tune-Up hosted by Susquehanna last Friday. Leder posted marks of 5.64 meters in the long jump and 11.27 meters in the triple jump.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Marc Quarrie, So., OF, Muhlenberg
Miami, Fla. | Riviera Prep
Quarrie went 5-for-8 with two doubles, a home run, two stolen bases, seven runs scored and four RBIs as the Mules split a season-opening doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark. He hit .625 in the two games with an OPS of 2.000. Quarrie was 3-for-5 in the opening game, belting a solo home run in the seventh inning of an 11-5 loss, and scored five runs in the nightcap, an 18-5 win, reaching base in six of his seven plate appearances.

Pitcher of the Week
John Francesconi, So., RHP, Gettysburg 
Syracuse, N.Y. | Marcellus
Francesconi threw four shutout innings in relief with five strikeouts and no walks to claim the game-two win in a sweep of Penn College on Sunday.

Offensive Player of the Week
Clay Almgren, Jr., A/M, Swarthmore 
Woodinville, Wash. | Eastside Catholic
Almgren led the 13th-ranked Garnet in points (13) and assists (6) over a pair of victories. He was second on the team in goals (7) and caused turnovers (2) while also collecting seven ground balls. The junior opened the week by tying his career best with seven points on four goals and three assists in a 16-8 win against Eastern. He then recorded three goals and three assists for six points in a 20-8 road win at Messiah. All three of his goals and one of his assists came during a 10-0 run in the first half that helped Swarthmore take over the game. Almgren leads the conference in points and assists and ranks third in goals.

Defensive Player of the Week
Drew Tyson, Jr., GK, Swarthmore 
Santa Ana, Calif. | Foothill 
Tyson played two strong games in goal to lead the 13th-ranked Garnet to a pair of wins. He allowed just five goals and made 24 saves in 89-plus minutes of action for an .828 save percentage and 3.35 goals against average. The goalkeeper also tallied eight ground balls and four caused turnovers, cutting off several pass attempts by the opponent. Tyson opened the week with 14 saves on 17 shots (.824), five ground balls, and three caused turnovers in a 16-8 win versus Eastern. The junior then stopped 10 shots and allowed just two goals (.833) in a 20-8 victory at Messiah. Tyson leads the conference in goals against average and save percentage and ranks second in saves per game.

Offensive Player of the Week

Epstein kicked off her 2025 season in impressive fashion for the Fords, racking up 12 points in her first two games including both game-winning goals. In the season opener against Bates, the junior scored four goals and added four assists for a game-high eight points, while also setting the Haverford school record with 13 draw controls in a single game. On Saturday against Stockton, Epstein notched three goals, one assist, and eight draw controls. Epstein currently leads the Centennial Conference with 21 draw controls and ranks eighth in the nation with an average of 10.5 draw controls per game.

Defensive Player of the Week
Emma Norton, Sr., M, Dickinson
Old Greenwich, Conn. | Greenwich
Norton was a huge part of the Red Devils defense that allowed just six goals against per game in wins over Susquehanna (13-4) and 19th-ranked Denison (9-8). Norton picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers in the two victories.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Michael Melnikov, Jr., Swarthmore 
Karlsruhe, Germany 
Melnikov went 5-1 overall with a perfect 3-0 singles mark at the ITA Indoor National Championship as the 9th-ranked Garnet faced a trio of opponents ranked in the top 11 nationally and took sixth place in the tournament. All three of his singles victories were in straight sets. Melnikov was 2-0 versus No. 4 Case Western Reserve and No. 11 Trinity (Texas) before finishing the weekend 1-1 against No. 7 Emory. The junior was directly responsible for three of the eight total team points Swarthmore scored over the three matches and his doubles play helped the Garnet earn another point.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Isabella Sorhegui, Jr., Washington College

Sorhegui repeated as Player of the Week after going 1-0 in both singles and doubles in the Shorewomen's 5-2 win at Drew on Friday night. In doubles, the junior teamed with Gaby Coutts to win 6-0 over Drew's Elise Parisi and Jada Worthem at third doubles and was the opening doubles match to conclude. In singles, Sorhegui played four singles and won the first singles match to finish in a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the Rangers' Riley Roesel.
