Athletes of the Week: Feb. 3-9

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The winter championship season is set to kick off this weekend in the Centennial Conference, with wrestling opening up the championship festitivies on Saturday at Gettysburg. Weekly awards were distributed this week in basketball, indoor track & field and wrestling. 

Michaela O'Neil of Johns Hopkins women's basketball and Reza Eshghi of Haverford track & field earned back-to-back weekly awards, while Thomas Monn of McDaniel wrestling and Sara Bartlett of Johns Hopkins track & field also garnered weekly accolades for the second time this winter.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
David Kearney, Jr., G/F, McDaniel 
Havertown, Pa. | The Haverford School 
Kearney averaged 27.0 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting 57.1% from the floor and 93.3% from the free throw line as McDaniel went 2-0 with two conference road wins to move into sixth place in the Centennial standings. Kearney went 20-for-35 from the floor and 14-for-15 from the free throw line while also averaging 2.5 steals per contest. He scored 30 points in a 62-57 win at Washington College, becoming the first Green Terror to score 30 points in a game since Mike Wallace scored 37 points at Lycoming on Nov. 13, 2021. He also grabbed eight rebounds and forced four steals. In a convincing 70-57 victory at Haverford, Kearney totaled 24 points and 19 rebounds to become first McDaniel player to have at least 19 rebounds since Kevin Yrizarry had 19 against Muhlenberg on Feb. 18, 2017. With 13 wins this season, the Green Terror have posted their most wins since 2015-16.

Player of the Week
Michaela O'Neil, Sr., F, Johns Hopkins
Auburndale, Mass. | Newton North
O'Neil repeated as Player of the Week after leading Johns Hopkins to 2-0 week with key victories over Gettysburg and Ursinus. O'Neil punched up 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocks in a 59-51 win against No. 9/10 Gettysburg, then added a career-high 23 points and four rebounds in a 66-60 win over Ursinus.  She shot 53.8% from the floor (14-of-26) in the two wins and collected her 500th career rebound against the Bullets and her 1,000th career point against the Bears. For the week, O'Neil posted averages of 19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.5 three-pointers per contest.

WRESTLING

Athlete of the Week
Thomas Monn, Jr., 149, McDaniel 
Hagerstown, Md. | Washington Tech 
Monn posted three more wins last week to finish undefeated in conference dual matches this season at 5-0. In a 24-15 home win over Gettysburg on Thursday, Monn posted an 11-1 major decision over Ethan Composto, who entered the bout undefeated (21-0), ranked 15th nationally and third in Region 3. On Saturday, Monn pinned Merchant Marine's Matthew Trinidad in 3:43 before picking up a fall in 3:51 over Max Parnis of Ursinus who is ranked fifth in Region 3. Ranked 10th nationally and first in Region 3 at 149 pounds, Monn has an overall record of 25-2 this season, including 17-0 in dual matches, with 12 falls, six tech falls and four major decisions. He also has a career record of 92-9 and is ranked sixth in program history as he looks to become just the fourth wrestler to total 100 wins.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Reza Eshghi, Sr., Haverford
Lincoln, Mass. | Concord Academy 
Eshghi repeated as Track Athlete of the Week after recording the sixth-fastest mile time in the storied history of Centennial men's indoor track & field at the Fastrack Invitational on Friday. Eshghi continued his ascent up the national leaderboards and the CC and Haverford record books with a blazing 4:06.06 in the mile, which marks a new personal best and ranks seventh in Haverford program history and sixth in Division III this winter. The Lincoln, Mass. native placed 11th overall in the event, finishing behind only Division I competitors in the event.

Field Athlete of the Week
Eli Steel, Fr., Gettysburg
York, Pa. | York Country Day School 
Steel set a new Gettysburg program record in the triple jump with a mark of 13.96 meters at the River Hawk Showdown at Susquehanna last Friday. Steel's mark currently ranks 41st in Division III.

Track Athlete of the Week
Maya Richwine, So., Muhlenberg

Richwine posted two times that are second-best in the Centennial Conference this season at the Fastrack National Invite. She ran a qualifying time of 9.10 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, just a hundredth of a second off the top clocking in the CC. Richwine was the only Division III runner to qualify for the final, where she placed seventh. In the 200 meters, she won her heat with a time of 26.35, which is .24 seconds off the top mark in the CC and .12 seconds off the 17-year-old school record. Richwine's 60 hurdles time ranks 35th in the nation. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Sara Bartlett, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
White Plains, N.Y. | Valhalla
Bartlett registered the seventh-best long jump in Centennial history at the FastTrack Invitational. Bartlett's mark of 5.55 meters also ranks 21st in the Division III. She also added a 11.43-meter leap in the triple jump, finishing fourth in both events. Bartlett was the only Division III competitor to place in the top 15 in the long jump and the only Division III entry to place in the top seven in the triple at the meet.
