Athletes of the Week: March 30-April 5

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of March 30-April 5 in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. 

Ben Dale of Franklin & Marshall men’s lacrosse secured weekly honors for the second time this spring, while Swarthmore softball’s Lilly Goldberg earned recognition for the second straight week. In track & field, Erika Ezumba of Johns Hopkins set a new Centennial Conference record in the hammer throw, and Mitchell Davis of Ursinus currently leads all of Division III in the pole vault.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
William Jaun, Gr., 1B/LHP, Johns Hopkins  
Loveland, Ohio | St. Xavier
Jaun powered the Blue Jays to a 4-0 week in conference play, highlighted by two wins over No. 15 Gettysburg and a sweep of Muhlenberg. He hit .579 (11-for-19) with 16 RBIs, 11 runs, three home runs, and a 1.724 OPS. In a program-record 34-14 win at Gettysburg, the first baseman went 4-for-4 with six RBIs, five runs, and a three-run homer. He followed with a 4-for-5, eight-RBI performance in a 15-13 win, a grand slam and a two-run homer.

Pitcher of the Week
Elias Philiposian, Sr., P, Washington College 
Woolwich Township, N.J. | Paul VI 

Philiposian went 1-0 with a save and an ERA of 0.00 in 4.2 hitless innings over two appearances. In Tuesday's 11-10 win over visiting McDaniel, the senior closer recorded the final five outs to pick up the save. On Saturday in game two's 17-16 victory over visiting Dickinson in 10 innings, Philiposian tossed three hitless and scoreless innings, pitching to just one over the minimum.

SOFTBALL    

Player of the Week
Morgan Risnychok, Fr., C/INF, Franklin & Marshall 
Blue Bell, Pa. | Springside Chestnut Hill

Risnychok led the Diplomats offense in a 3-3 week, slashing .389/.421/.833 with two home runs, ten RBI, and one triple. Her best game of the week came in Franklin & Marshall's 10-2 win in the first game against Albright on Thursday, as she hit 2-for-4 with one home run, one triple, and a four RBI. She recorded two RBI apiece in three other games that week including a game-winning two-RBI single in F&M's 2-1 win in the first game against Haverford on Saturday.

Pitcher of the Week
Lilly Goldberg, So., RHP, Swarthmore
Pittsford, N.Y. | Pittsford Mendon 
Goldberg tossed two complete-game wins for the Garnet, posting a 1.00 ERA over 14.0 innings while allowing just two runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks (.196 opponent average). The sophomore opened with a three-hit shutout at Franklin & Marshall and followed with a two-run, six-strikeout complete game at McDaniel.

MEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week
Ben Dale, So., A, Franklin & Marshall 
Wheaton, Ill. | Millbrook School

Dale registered a career-high 12 points on three goals and nine assists during the Diplomats' 22-4 win versus McDaniel. Dale's nine assists were the third-most in a single game in program history in addition to his fifth hat trick of the season. Dale is currently leading the Centennial Conference in both points (64) and assists (41) this season.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jace Riley Day, Sr., G, Muhlenberg 
Montclair, N.J. | Cushing Academy (Mass.)

Day made 19 saves while allowing only eight goals in the Mules' 12-8 win at No.17 Washington College. The 19 stops were the most by a Muhlenberg goalie in a Centennial Conference win since 2009. Day made 11 of his saves in the second half, when the Mules were outshot by a 28-18 margin. In the fourth quarter, which started with Muhlenberg clinging to an 8-7 lead, Day stopped six shots while allowing just one goal, with five of the saves coming on potential game-tying shots.

Offensive Player of the Week
Annabel Stifler, Sr., M, Swarthmore

Stifler led the Garnet with 10 goals and 11 points in a 2-0 week, adding six caused turnovers, three ground balls, and three draw controls. The senior scored four goals, including the late game-winner, in a 14-12 victory over No. 23 Muhlenberg, then totaled six goals and an assist in a 14-8 win against Dickinson, fueling a decisive third-quarter run.

Defensive Player of the Week
Brooke Carrier, Jr., GK, Swarthmore
Philadelphia, Pa. | Central

Carrier backstopped the Garnet to two wins, extending their streak to four. The junior made 31 saves with a .608 save percentage, opening with a career-high 19 stops in a 14-12 win over No. 23 Muhlenberg and adding 12 saves in a 14-8 victory against Dickinson. She has recorded double-digit saves in three straight games, helping power three consecutive conference wins.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Zac Ashtiani, Sr., Franklin & Marshall  
Tiburon, Calif. | San Francisco University HS

Ashtiani recorded two singles' wins, including a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent last week. Taking on No. 48 Dylan Blenkiron in singles, Ashtiani got out to an early lead with a 6-4 win during the first set. His opponent evened the score with a 6-2 second set, but the Diplomats' senior secured F&M's team point with a win during the 10-point tiebreak against his opponent who is currently ranked ninth in the Atlantic South Region.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Sofia Sperandei, So., Washington College  
Pyla, Cyprus | King Richard School
Sperandei went 2-0 in both singles and doubles during a 2-0 week for the Shorewomen. She clinched a 4-3 win over No. 46 Salisbury with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles, winning the final two games of the third set. On Saturday, she moved up to No. 3 singles and swept Muhlenberg 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Sperandei teamed with Jess Wilde to beat Salisbury 6-2 at third doubles and paired with Samy Fawzi Sanchez to defeat Muhlenberg 6-0 at the same spot.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Simon Lane, Fr., Haverford 
Chicago, Ill. | UChicago Laboratory Schools 

Lane competed in the seeded 5,000-meter race at the Sam Howell Distance Carnival on Saturday night and was the top Division III finisher, crossing the line sixth overall in 14:21.86 against a field of Division I athletes. The time currently ranks fifth among Division III runners.

Davis set the current Division III benchmark in the pole vault at the Ursinus Springfest, clearing a career-best 5.25 meters, and is now just 0.10 meters shy of the Centennial Conference outdoor record.m).

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD 

Track Athlete of the Week

Eleni Alvarez, Gr., Johns Hopkins
North Brunswick, N.J. | St. Thomas Aquinas

Alvarez delivered the Blue Jays’ lone event win of the Dalton Ebanks Invitational. She paced a field made up entirely of Division I competition in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a personal-best time of 11:01.73. Her mark ranks sixth in Division III this season. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Erika Ezumba, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Owings Mills, Md. | Notre Dame Prep

Ezumba delivered a record-setting performance at the Dalton Ebanks Invitational, breaking the school and conference hammer throw records with a 54.09m mark to place fifth. The throw ranks third in Division III this season. Ezumba also set a new school record in the shot put (13.65m), finishing fifth and ranking eighth in Division III and fourth in conference history.
