Athletes of the Week: Apr. 15-21

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The spring Centennial Conference season is winding down as the regular season comes to a conclusion this week in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. The CC golf championships will open up the spring championship season this weekend at Waynesboro Country Club in Waynesboro, Pa. 

Three multi-time winners lead this week's group of Centennial honorees for the week of April 15-21 - Jordan Basso of Gettysburg women's lacrosse, Abbey Russano of Haverford women's tennis and John Reichenbach of Muhlenberg men's outdoor track & field. Reichenbach and Ethan Hart of Dickinson men's outdoor track & field both set conference records last week.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week

Jacob Harris, So., Utility, Johns Hopkins 
Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. | Grosse Pointe South
Harris was red-hot at the plate all week for the Blue Jays, slashing .700/.727/.950 in a 4-1 stretch.The sophomore registered multiple hits in all five games, opening his week going 3-for-4 with a double and triple against McDaniel before ending it with a perfect 4-for-4 outing in a run-rule win over Muhlenberg. Harris' 14 hits this week account for more than half of his total on the season (23), with the sophomore leading a potent Hopkins offense in triples (3), batting average (.523), OBP (.632) and OPS (1.450).

Pitcher of the Week
Quinn Rovner, Gr., RHP, Johns Hopkins
Blue Bell, Pa. | Wissahickon
Rovner was near-perfect in his lone start of the week, helping lead the Blue Jays to a 15-0, run-rule win over Muhlenberg. The graduate student was the key cog in his Hopkins' fourth combined shutout of the season, allowing just one hit and striking out a season-high seven batters in five shutout innings against the Mules. The win moved Rovner to 5-1, with his ERA of 1.38 in conference play serving as the top mark in the Centennial.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week

Iris Barone, So., CF, Swarthmore
Pittsburgh, Pa. | Mount Lebanon
Barone batted .571 (8-for-14) with eight runs, seven stolen bases and an RBI at the top of Swarthmore's lineup. The sophomore reached base a total of 10 times with eight hits and two walks over four games. Barone had multiple hits in three games, including a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored against McDaniel. She has scored a run in nine-straight games.

Pitcher of the Week

Bangor, Maine | Bangor 
Barron earned a pair of wins against Ursinus and McDaniel as she went 2-0 on the week. The sophomore allowed one run over 14.2 innings with a 0.48 ERA. Barron allowed just five hits and held opponents to a .104 batting average while striking out 12 batters. She earned her ninth and 10th wins of the season and lowered her ERA to 2.50 on the season.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Connor Garrison, Sr., A, Washington College
Middletown, Del. | Appoquinimink 
Garrison scored six goals and added an assist in a 2-0 week for the Shoremen as they kept their playoff hopes alive with one-goal wins over Franklin & Marshall and Ursinus. In the 11-10 win at F&M on Wednesday, he tallied a game-best four points on three goals and an assist. He scored the game-tying goal with 5:57 left in the fourth quarter to level the game at 9-9 as part of the team's 4-0 run to win the game. Garrison also picked up two ground balls in the victory, one of which led directly to a goal as WC beat F&M for the first time in nine years.  On Saturday at Ursinus in a 9-8 win, he scored three goals to tie for game-best. His goal with 7:37 to go in the third quarter put Washington ahead 5-4 and it was a lead it never relinquished.

Defensive Player of the Week
John McKee, Sr., FO, Dickinson
Virginia Beach, Va. | Episcopal
McKee played a critical role in a 2-0 conference week for the seventh-ranked Red Devils. In Wednesday's 12-8 home win over No. 19 Gettysburg, he went 15-of-21 at the “X” and collected 11 ground balls. In a tight 12-11 road win over Haverford on Saturday he was 20-of-24 with 13 ground balls and also contributed one goal on his lone shot. For the season he leads the Centennial in faceoff wins with 197, 19 more than his next closest challenger.

Offensive Player of the Week

Basso repeated as Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Bullets to a 2-0 week that included a 12-11 win over No. 2 Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday to remain the only undefeated team in conference play. She scored seven goals and added three assists on the week for 10 points that included three goals on four shots in the win over the Diplomats. That performance included the game-winning tally with 1:08 to play.

Defensive Player of the Week

Mount Laurel, N.J. | Lenape
Cortese led the Bullets to a 2-0 week that included a 12-11 win over No. 2 Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday to remain the only undefeated team in conference play. She made 19 saves in goal on the week that included a career-high 15 against the Diplomats. She made four stops in just one half of play at Ursinus on Saturday. For the week, she posted a .559 save percentage in 90 minutes between the pipes.

MEN'S TENNIS

Athlete of the Week
Hanyu Liu, Gr., Johns Hopkins
Beijing, China | IMG Academy 
Liu went 3-0 at number three singles and 3-0 at number three doubles to lead Johns Hopkins to a 3-0 week. On Tuesday, he paired with Chakor Rajendra to win 8-1 and then won 6-2, 6-0 in singles as the Blue Jays beat the Red Devils. On Friday afternoon, Liu and Rajendra won 8-4 in doubles and Liu then won 6-3, 6-2 in singles and clinched the win at No. 39 Haverford. Against No. 21 Mary Washington, he and Rajendra won 8-7 in doubles and Liu then won 6-4, 6-2 in singles to earn his 100th career victory.

Athlete of the Week

Russano went 2-0 in both singles and doubles to help the Fords to key Centennial wins over Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall last week. In Wednesday's 6-3 upset win for the 33rd-ranked Fords over the 27th-ranked Garnet, Russano and doubles partner Ellie Esterowitz defeated Lola Diaz and Erica Stutz 8-3, before claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win over Diaz at No. 1 singles. In Saturday's 8-1 win over F&M, Russano and Esterowitz teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Mackenzie Sherman and Sophia Rhazali before posting a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles vs. Jenna Harrison.

Track Athlete of the Week
Reza Eshghi, Jr., Haverford
Lincoln, Mass. | Concord Academy 
Eshghi recorded the fourth-fastest 1500 meter time in Division III and the eighth-fastest time in Centennial history at the Paul Donahue Invitational at Widener on Friday night. The junior crossed the finish line in 3:47.25 to place fourth, trailing only a pair of Division I runners from LaSalle and an unattached professional athlete.

Ethan Hart, Sr., Dickinson
New Market, Md. | Linganore
Hart set new Centennial and school records in the shot put at the Shippensburg Mid-Week Invite last Wednesday. Hart's toss of 17.45 meters broke the previous CC mark of 16.80 meters, held by Gettysburg's Nate Grim since 1998. That mark also ranks third in the nation this spring.

John Reichenbach, Gr., Muhlenberg
Allentown, Pa. | Salisbury 
Reichenbach cleared 2.10 meters in the high jump at Moravian's Coach P Invitational, breaking the school record and tying the Centennial Conference record that had stood unmatched since 1997. The mark is tied for the best in Division III so far this season. Reichenbach won the high jump and also posted a regional-qualifying mark in the long jump, tying for second behind a Division II athlete.

Track Athlete of the Week
Lauren Phillips, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Mount Laurel, N.J. | Moorestown Friends School 
Phillips posted the second-fastest 200-meter dash time in Centennial history and two top-five times on the national performance list at the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational on Saturday. The junior opened her day in the 400, crossing the line in first with a time of 55.72 — a time that also ranks as the fifth-fastest in Division III — before breaking her own program record and setting the third-best time in Division III in the 200, finishing in 24.37. That 200 time is the second-fastest in CC history. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Holly Ferrara, Sr., Gettysburg
Holland, Pa. | Council Rock South
Ferrara led the Bullets to a second-place finish at their own Mason-Dixon Invitational on Saturday. She won the javelin with a season-best throw of 42.57 meters. The mark currently ranks sixth in Division III this season.
