Athletes of the Week: April 7-13

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference play is heating up for spring sports with just a few weeks of the regular season remaining. Awards have been distributed this week in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. 

Jayden McKeen of Ursinus men's track & field continues to make his mark this spring with his third conseuctive weekly award, while Clay Almgren of Swarthmore men's lacrosse also earned his third weekly honor of the season. Lilly Goldberg of Swarthmore softball secured CC weekly honors for the second time.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Jimmy Stevens, Gr., 2B, Johns Hopkins
New Albany, Ohio | New Albany
Stevens powered Hopkins to a three-win week, leading the offense in victories over McDaniel (13–2) and a doubleheader sweep of Haverford (12–7, 19–6). The graduate student went 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate, racking up 13 RBIs, scoring six runs and tallying a double, a triple and three home runs—all against Haverford, including a multi-homer performance in game one.

Pitcher of the Week
David Bertz, Fr., RHP, Haverford 
Nazareth, Pa. | Nazareth Area 
Bertz did not allow an earned run across 6.2 innings in an 11-1 win over Muhlenberg last Wednesday. The freshman struck out seven batters while allowing just two hits to earn his third win of the season.

SOFTBALL

Player of the Week
Olivia McClammy, Sr., Utility, Swarthmore 
Riverside, Conn. | Greenwich
McClammy batted .583 (7-for-12) with five RBIs, five runs, three doubles and two walks in a 3-1 week for the Garnet. The senior slugged .833 with a .667 on-base percentage. McClammy reached base six times with three hits, three walks, three runs and one RBI in a crucial double-header split against No. 13 Gettysburg. McClammy broke the program career doubles record with her 39th and 40th career doubles in game two against the Bullets. 

Pitcher of the Week
Lilly Goldberg, Fr., RHP, Swarthmore
Pittsford, N.Y. | Pittsford Mendon
Goldberg went 2-0 this week without allowing an earned run over 15.2 innings. The first-year struck out 25 batters, allowing seven hits and two unearned runs against McDaniel and No. 13 Gettysburg. Goldberg struck out 11 batters in both starts, while adding three more punch outs in 1.2 innings of relief against the Bullets. Goldberg earned a crucial conference victory over Gettysburg with seven innings of three-hit ball in the circle in Saturday's opener.

MEN'S LACROSSE

Offensive Player of the Week
Clay Almgren, Jr., A/M, Swarthmore 
Woodinville, Wash. | Eastside Catholic
Almgren led the 18th-ranked Garnet in goals (7), assists (7), and points (14) in a 2-0 week. The junior tallied five more points than the next-closest player on the squad. He also totaled five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Almgren opened the week by tying his career high with five goals and adding three assists for eight points in a 17-7 win at Ursinus. He then produced six points on two goals and four helpers in a 19-4 victory versus McDaniel. Almgren leads the conference with 69 points this season, 12 more than the next-closest player.

Defensive Player of the Week
Andy Marquet, Sr., D, Gettysburg
Berwyn, Pa. | Conestoga
Marquet led the Bullets to a 2-0 week and into solo first place in the conference standings. He paced the defense with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers that included a seven-ground ball, four-caused turnover night in the 13-12 overtime win over No. 17 Dickinson. He also scored a goal in that contest.

Offensive Player of the Week
Emily Vaughan, Sr., M, Muhlenberg
Allentown, Pa. | Central Catholic 
Vaughan, who did not score a goal in any of the Mules' first three CC games of the season, tied her career high with four goals in an 8-7 win against Washington College in a rematch of last year's first-round playoff game. Vaughan's four tallies included a tying goal (1-1) and two go-ahead goals in the second half, including the winner with 2:07 remaining in regulation. She scored her goals on only seven shots and also contributed to an outstanding defense effort with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. In a 17-8 non-conference win against Montclair State, Vaughan recorded an assist, five draw controls, three ground balls, and four caused turnovers. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Ellison Ervin, Sr., GK, Muhlenberg
Emmaus, Pa. | Emmaus 
Ervin recorded a 6.54 goals-against average and .586 save percentage in a pair of wins for the Mules. In a rematch of last year's first-round CC playoff game, Ervin tied her season high with 13 saves in Muhlenberg's 8-7 win. She made five saves on free-position shots in holding the Shorewomen, the second-leading scoring team in the CC, to seven goals a game after they scored a school-record 25. Ervin also stopped four shots in a 17-8 non-conference win against Montclair State.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week

Seongnam-si, South Korea | Homeschooled
Kim went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles in three matches for the Shoremen last week. On Tuesday against visiting No. 39 Franklin & Marshall, Kim downed Luke Brodsky in singles (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) and in doubles teamed up with Tichi Chialva to best F&M's Zac Ashtiani and Gonzalo Gentou, 6-3. On Saturday in a 6-1 victory over No. 53 TCNJ, he topped Harrison Maitland-Carter in singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and in doubles he was joined by Chialva to top the Northeast Region's No. 7 team of Maitland-Carter and Asa Wong, 6-4. On Sunday against No. 14 Johns Hopkins, Kim topped Dylan Blenkiron 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 1-0 (10-2) and in doubles with Chialva took the fourth-ranked doubles team in the region, JHU's Blenkiron and Daniel Ardila to a tiebreak.

Player of the Week
Bella Vassalluzzo, Jr., Ursinus 
Newtown, Pa. | Council Rock North 
Vassalluzzo went a perfect 4-0 in singles and doubles play to help lift the Bears to a 2-0 week. She opened by teaming up with Allie Armour at No. 1 doubles to defeat Savannah Falk and Karolina Iordache of Arcadia 6-0 on Thursday. Vassalluzzo then defeated Jada Young 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4 singles in the Bears' 5-2 win over Arcadia. She followed that by teaming with Armour again for a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Gettysburg's duo of Sarah Guistwite and Shoshi Dondes, and later bested Dondes at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2 to help the Bears defeat Gettysburg 4-3.

Track Athlete of the Week
Peter LaRochelle, Sr., Haverford
Great Barrington, Mass. | Monument Mountain Regional
LaRochelle ran the second-fastest 10,000-meter time in Centennial Conference history at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic this past weekend. Competing against a number of Division I and II runners, LaRochelle placed seventh with a personal-best time of 29:37.96. That times ranks fifth in Division III this spring, second all-time in the CC and third all-time in Haverford program history. 

Field Athlete of the Week

Coal Twp, Pa. | Shamokin Area 
McKeen three-peated as Field Athlete of the Week following another superb javelin mark at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic. The sophomore recorded a throw of 66.38 meters, finishing second overall and as the top Division III athlete in the event. McKeen defeated numerous Division I and II athletes in the event and had the top javelin throw of the week in Division III.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Lianne Saussy, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Weston, Conn. | Weston 
Saussy delivered a standout performance over the weekend, recording some of the fastest times in Hopkins history across three different events. Competing at the Duke Invitational, she etched her name into the record books by helping the 4x100m relay team post a school-record time of 47.94, earning a 10th-place finish. She followed that up by contributing to the 4x400m squad’s time of 3:49.56—the second-fastest mark ever recorded in a Hopkins uniform—securing ninth overall. Capping off her impressive weekend, the Weston, Conn. native clocked a personal-best 1:04.19 in the 400m hurdles, the second-fastest time in program history. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Lydia Morris-Kliment, So., Swarthmore 
Needham, Mass. | Winsor School 
Morris-Kliment posted the conference's best mark in the discus this season to win the event at West Chester's Bill Butler Invitational. The sophomore recorded a toss of 41.79 meters on her second attempt. It was Morris-Kliment's fourth top-five finish in the discus this season but her first victory. The mark ranks 40th in the nation so far this spring.
