Athletes of the Week: April 6-12

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of April 6-12 in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. 

Peyton Gestole of Washington College men's lacrosse and Max Lindstrom of Swarthmore men's tennis earned weekly honors for the second time in the last three weeks, while the Johns Hopkins women's 4x100 relay team set a new conference record and Trevor Richwine of Dickinson men's outdoor track & field posted the time 800 meter time in the nation to lead this week's honorees.

BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Mike Carcich, So., 1B, Muhlenberg
Westwood, N.J. | Westwood 
Carcich hit .500 with a 1.703 OPS, four runs scored and six RBIS in a 3-1 week for the Mules, playing an important role in all three wins. In the second game of the Washington College doubleheader, he belted the first two home runs of his career, including one in the first that turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead, and also hit a double. In the first game, he walked and scored in Muhlenberg's six-run game-tying rally in the eighth, then brought in the winning run in the ninth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Against Haverford, with the Mules trailing 9-7 in the eighth, he singled on an 0-2 pitch, and the teammate who pinch-ran for him wound up scoring the go-ahead run in a 10-9 win. 

Pitcher of the Week
Michael Yousef, So., RHP, Johns Hopkins
Dana Point, Calif. | Capistrano Valley 
Yousef powered the Blue Jays to a 6-5 win over McDaniel with his fifth win of the season. He tossed 5.2 innings in the victory allowing four runs (three unearned) on six hits, while fanning a career-high 10 batters and walking none.

SOFTBALL    

Player of the Week
Ava Babcock, Jr., C, Swarthmore 
Warriors Mark, Pa. | State College Area 
Babcock batted .538 (7-for-13) with a 1.417 OPS to lead the Garnet to a 3-1 week. She totaled four doubles, eight RBIs, and three runs. The junior went 4-for-4 with three doubles, four RBIs, and a run in a 9-1 victory over Ursinus. All three of her doubles drove in runs and one was the game-ending hit in the sixth. Babcock closed the week by going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs, and two runs in a 14-3 triumph at Gettysburg.

Pitcher of the Week
Eden Clark, Fr., RHP, Muhlenberg
Mill Valley, Calif. | Tamalpais
Clark went 3-0 with a 0.44 ERA in three starts, striking out 15 batters in 16 innings. After the Mules lost the opening game of the doubleheader with Franklin & Marshall, she pitched six shutout innings in the nightcap, allowing only two hits and fanning seven. Clark gave up just one hit in a four-inning scoreless stint against Elizabethtown and tossed six innings of one-run ball vs. Washington College. For the week, she surrendered eight hits - all singles - in her three starts, holding opponents to a .148 batting average.

MEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week

Gestole earned weekly accolades for the second time in the past three weeks after totalaing 11 points on six goals and five assists in a 2-0 week for the Shoremen. The junior capped a three-goal, four-point performance with the golden goal with 1:03 left in overtime in a 12-11 win on Saturday at Haverford for his second walk-off score of the season. On Wednesday in an 18-3 victory at McDaniel, Gestole led all players with four assists and seven points and tied for game-best in goals with three. He tallied the assist on the goal that put WC ahead for good at 3-2 with 3:07 to go in the stanza.

Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Backus, So., FO, Dickinson
Fairfield, Conn. | Fairfield Prep
Backus served a key part in helping the 13th-ranked Red Devils notch wins over Gettysburg and St. Mary's (Md.) last week, winning 21 of his 34 faceoff attempts (61.8%). In a conference showdown against 10th-ranked Gettysburg last Wednesday, he won 10-of-22 faceoffs and collected eight ground balls in the process. One of his biggest moments in the game came right after Gettysburg cut the margin to 11-10 with 7:03 to play, as he won the ensuing faceoff leading to Luke Whalen scoring the eventual game-winner in the 12-11 victory. On Saturday, he won 11-of-12 faceoffs and ran down four ground balls in an 11-5 non-conference triumph over St. Mary's. He started the game with a bang, winning the opening faceoff and ripping the ball past the keeper just five seconds in, before claiming the following draw that allowed Ramsey Huggins to strike only 34 seconds later.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week
Mia Salvatierra, Sr., A, Washington College

Salvatierra totaled 14 points on four goals and 10 assists, including her 100th career helper, in a 2-0 week for the Shorewomen. She also picked up seven ground balls and caused seven turnovers. In Monday's 17-13 win at Ursinus, the senior tied the program mark for assists in a game with a personal-best seven, becoming the fifth player to do so and the sixth time overall in team history. In the game's decisive 6-0 run that put the Shorewomen ahead 17-12, she scored twice and handed out one assist, including scoring the goal that put Washington ahead for good at 13-12 with 11:52 to go in the fourth quarter. Salvatierra also scooped up a career-topping four ground balls and tallied three caused turnovers. On Saturday in a 14-12 victory against visiting No. 24 Muhlenberg, she passed out three assists and scored twice in addition to netting a career-best four caused turnovers and adding three ground balls. The senior became the third player in team history to reach 100 career assists on a goal by Anna Wilson that made it 14-7 with 7:58 to go in the game.

DiGiovanni posted a 66.7% save percentage during the Diplomats' 13-7 win versus Dickinson during their only game of the week. The senior made 14 saves and collected three additional ground balls around the crease.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Max Lindstrom, Sr., Swarthmore 
Satellite Beach, Fla. | Satellite 
Lindstrom secured weekly honors for the second time in the past three weeks after going 4-1 over three matches to help the 12th-ranked Garnet take third place at the Mary Washington Invitational. He earned a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win at second singles in a 4-1 victory against No. 14 Emory in the quarterfinals. The senior teamed with Winston Zhang for a 7-6 tiebreak triumph at third doubles versus No. 7 Johns Hopkins in the semifinals. Lindstrom finished the weekend with a pair of victories in the third-place match against No. 8 WashU. He paired with Zhang for a 6-2 win at third doubles before earning a 6-2, 6-2 success at second singles to help Swarthmore defeat the Bears 4-1.

Player of the Week
Kathleen Shiffer, Sr., Swarthmore 
Bell Canyon, Calif. | Calabasas 
Shiffer won both of her matches to lead the 21st-ranked Garnet to a 4-3 victory over No. 26 Mary Washington. The senior teamed with Paola Almeda for a 6-2 victory at second doubles. She then battled to a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-1) win at fourth singles. Shiffer was the only Swarthmore player to record two wins in the match.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Track Athlete of the Week
Trevor Richwine, Sr., Dickinson
Newville, Pa. | Big Spring 
Richwine recorded the fastest 800-meter time in Division III at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic. He won the 800 against competitors from Division I and II institutions, clocking in at 1:48.49, which is just short of his school record set last May at the Widener Final Qualifier (1:48.31). The time paced Division III this season and is over a second faster than the number two time (SUNY Geneseo, 1:49.99).

Field Athlete of the Week
Oluwademilade Adeniran, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Seymour, Conn. | Hopkins School 
Adeniran highlighted Hopkins' performances at the Gallaudet Bison Classic, breaking his own school record in the triple jump. Adeniran won the event with a leap of 14.75 meters, which ranks sixth in Division III this season, extends his program record and ranks second in Centennial Conference history.

4x100 Relay, Johns Hopkins 
Mirra Klimov | Chloe Zhang | Ellie Lewis | Dominique Thomas 
The Hopkins' 4x100 relay squad of Mirra Klimov, Chloe Zhang, Ellie Lewis and Dominique Thomas set new conference and school records at the Duke Invitational. The quartet clocked a 46.74 to place 13th in the event. That time ranks seventh in the Division III this season and broke the previous CC record of 46.96 set by Dickinson in 2024. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Mackenzie Ward, Jr., Franklin & Marshall 
Old Tappan, N.J. | Northern Valley Regional 
Ward posted the top javelin mark in the Centennial Conference this season (38.92m) as she took home the individual title at the Messiah Invitational on Saturday. That marks currently ranks 41st in Division III this year.
