Athletes of the Week: Oct. 23-29

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The final Centennial Conference weekly awards of the season have been announced this week in field hockey, men's soccer and women's soccer, while volleyball and swimming honors were also distributed. 

Repeat winners for this week include Katherine Kohn of Swarthmore field hockey, Charlene Basque of Bryn Mawr field hockey, Christian Bignotti of Swarthmore men's soccer, and Meredith Mangum of Franklin & Marshall volleyball.

FIELD HOCKEY

Offensive Player of the Week
Katherine Kohn, Jr., F, Swarthmore

Bethesda, Md. | Holton Arms School
Kohn tallied five points on two goals and an assist in one-goal victories over both Washington College and Haverford last week as the Garnet clinched the No. 2 seed in the CC tournament. Kohn notched a goal in both games while adding an assist against the Fords. The junior leads the Garnet with 23 points this season. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Charlene Basque, So., GK, Bryn Mawr 
West Newbury, Mass. | Pentucket Regional
Basque played a pivotal role in Bryn Mawr's success last week as the Owls went 2-0 and solidified the No. 5 seed in the Centennial Conference postseason. Basque registered a pair of shutouts over Ursinus (4-0) and McDaniel (3-0), totaling six saves between the pipes for the Owls. Wednesday's win over Ursinus was the first for the Owls against the Bears since 1950. The sophomore goalkeeper has the second lowest goals against average (1.068) in the Centennial Conference while also holding the fourth spot in save percentage (.771).

MEN'S SOCCER

Offensive Player of the Week
Ben Strine, Sr., M, Washington College
Hockessin, Del. | Salesianum School
Strine scored both goals in the Shoremen's 2-1 win over visiting No. 4 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday night that secured the top spot in the upcoming conference tournament. Strine scored on a header in the 34th minute and made it 2-0 in the 57th minute to net a goal in each half.

Defensive Player of the Week
Christian Bignotti, Jr., GK, Swarthmore 
Santiago, Chile | Williston Northhampton
Bignotti helped the Garnet secure a postseason berth with his second shutout of the season on Saturday against Haverford. The junior blanked the Fords with three saves to send the Garnet to the Centennial Tournament with a 2-0 victory.

Offensive Player of the Week

Veronica Gibbons, Sr., M, Swarthmore 
Pittsburgh, Pa. | Upper St. Clair 
Gibbons scored all four of Swarthmore's goals this week with consecutive two-goal games. The senior tallied two goals at Washington College and another pair at Haverford to help the Garnet secure the top seed in the Centennial tournament. Gibbons tripled her goal total heading into the week as she now ranks second on the team with six goals. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Allison Storm, Sr., D, McDaniel 
Abingdon, Md. | Harford Tech
Storm highlighted a defensive effort that posted two more shutouts last week in 1-0 wins over No. 8 Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg. Against the Blue Jays, she was responsible for marking the conference's leading scorer, Katie Sullivan. On Saturday versus the Mules, the Green Terror did not allow a single shot while posting their 13th shutout in 17 games this season and sixth in a row, extending its shutout streak to 617:04. The team is currently ranked sixth in Division III in shutout percentage.

Offensive Player of the Week

Gianna Mangiamele, Jr., OH, Franklin & Marshall 
Westfield, N.J. | Westfield 
Mangiamele hit .403 during a 2-0 week that featured wins against Swarthmore and Messiah. Mangiamele had 29 kills against just errors in 62 attacks, averaging 4.57 points per set. The junior outside hitter hit .415 during a huge four-game victory over Swarthmore to give the Diplomats an inside track to a top three seed in the Centennial Conference tournament behind 19 kills. She followed that up with 10 more kills during the non-conference victory versus Messiah. Mangiamele added four blocks (two solo, two assisted) and four digs to her totals.

Defensive Player of the Week
Meredith Mangum, Sr., Libero, Franklin & Marshall 
Peachtree Corners, Ga. | Wesleyan School 
Mangum averaged 4.86 digs per set during a 2-0 week for F&M. The senior captain also registered 21 serve receptions and once ace. Mangum played a very balanced week with 18 digs against the Garnet and 16 digs versus Messiah. In addition to her defensive totals, Mangum added four assists.

Athlete of the Week

Charlie Cross, Sr., Gettysburg
Charlottesville, Va. | Albemarle
Cross had a four-win day in a 166-96 win over Franklin & Marshall to help the Bullets to their first win over the Diplomats in five seasons. Individually, he touched first in both breaststroke events, winning the 100 in a time of 58.43 seconds and the 200 in a time of 2:08.15. He also won the 400 IM with a mark of 4:16.22. Cross was also part of the 400 medley relay, which opened the meet with a win in a time of 3:28.77. His 200 breaststroke and 400 IM times rank 22nd and 23rd in the nation, respectively, while the 400 medley relay time for the Bullets is currently ranked eighth.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week

Annaliese Chen, Jr., Swarthmore 
Redwood City, Calif. | Sacred Heart 
Chen paced the Garnet with a pair of individual victories in a win at TCNJ on Saturday. Chen won her first of two events with a time of 2:11.29 in the 200 butterfly. She then claimed another victory in the 200 breaststroke at 2:31.39. The junior ranks 25th in the nation in the 200 butterfly.
