Athletes of the Week: Jan. 15-21

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Four repeat winner headline this week's Centennial Conference awards in basketball, swimming, indoor track & field and wrestling. 

Vakaris Grauslys of Franklin & Marshall men's basketball, Clair Marion of Dickinson women's basketball, Charlie Cross of Gettysburg men's swimming, and Victoria Kadiri of Johns Hopkins women's track & field have now each secured multiple weekly honors this season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week

Vakaris Grauslys, So., G, Franklin & Marshall
Vilnius, Lithuania | West Nottingham Academy
Grauslys earned Centennial Player of the Week accolades for the second week in a row and third time this season with averages of 14.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a 2-0 week for Franklin & Marshall. The sophomore guard began the week with a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double in a 56-42 win over Dickinson. Grauslys then posted a well-rounded stat line of 12 points, nine assists, seven boards and three steals in a 75-46 win vs. Haverford as the Diplomats remained tied for the lead in the CC with a 9-1 conference mark.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week
Clair Marion, Jr., G/F, Dickinson 
Clarks Summit, Pa. | Abington Heights
Marion repeated as Player of the Week and secured her third weekly honor of the year with averages of 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 48.2% from the floor and 85.7% from the free throw line in a 2-0 week for the red-hot Red Devils. The junior opened the week with 19 points, five boards, five steals and two assists in 29 minutes of a 62-38 home victory over Franklin & Marshall, including 14 first-half points to lead Dickinson to a 31-12 halftime edge. She followed that up with her third double-double of the campaign with game-highs in both points (22) and rebounds (10) while also contributing four steals and three assists as the Devils held off a furious charge from host Swarthmore, 49-43. Leading by four heading into the fourth quarter, Marion scored six points over the final 10 minutes and grabbed two clutch defensive boards inside the final minute with the game still in the balance to secure the victory.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Athlete of the Week

Charlie Cross, Sr., Gettysburg
Charlottesville, Va. | Albermarle
Cross repeated as Swimmer of the Week after leading the Bullets to a 175-87 win over Mary Washington on Saturday. Cross won three individual events on the afternoon, touching first in both breaststroke events. He swam a time of 59.86 seconds in the 100 and 2:10.73 in the 200 before rounding out the day with a first-place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:13.30. He opened his four-win outing as part of the 400 medley relay, which won with a time of 3:32.45.

Athlete of the Week

Mia Yancey, Jr., Gettysburg
Wallingford, Pa. | Strath Haven 
Yancey recorded three wins to lead the Bullets in a 176-88 win over Mary Washington on Saturday. She claimed individual victories in the 100 free (53.07 seconds) and 200 free (1:56.19) while also anchoring the 400 medley relay to a win (3:57.73). Yancey capped her day with a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (59.71).

Athlete of the Week

Paul Parise, Jr., 197, Muhlenberg
Camp Hill, Pa. | Camp Hill 
Parise recorded a big upset win to highlight Muhlenberg's 29-10 win at McDaniel. Competing against Jaedyn Harris, the defending Centennial Conference champion, the defending CC athlete of the week and the defending national wrestler of the week, Parise trailed 8-6 with 10 seconds left in the third period before taking his opponent down to his back for a six-point move and a 12-8 victory. It was only the second loss this season for Harris, who is ranked seventh in Division III at 197.

Track Athlete of the Week

Reza Eshghi, Jr., Haverford 
Lincoln, Mass. | Concord Academy 
Eshghi was a mile standout at the Villanova Invitational on Saturday evening, posting a 4:13.76, the top Division III finisher in the event at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island. The time is currently the 19th-fastest in the nation this season and is currently tops in the Centennial Conference by more than four seconds.
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Chase Shaneman, Jr., Ursinus
Honey Brook, Pa. | Twin Valley 
Shaneman notched the top weight throw in the conference at the Collegeville Classic on Saturday. The junior delivered a toss of 15.53 meters to place second in a field of 24 competitors.

Track Athlete of the Week

Mackenzie Setton, So., Johns Hopkins
Jericho, N.Y. | Jericho 
Setton impressed at Friday's Gotham Cup to the tune of a first and second-place finish. The sophomore started her day finishing second in the mile with a time of 5:01.09 — a time that ranks 10th in Division III — before adding a first-place finish in the DMR where she was part of a relay that crossed the line almost 30 seconds ahead of the next team in 12:22.25. The JHU DMR time currently leads the nation. 

Field Athlete of the Week
Victoria Kadiri, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Lynn, Mass. | Phillips Academy 
Kadiri excelled in her lone event at Saturday's Robert Comstock Cardinal Classic, winning the triple jump with a distance of 12.86 meters. The jump ranks as the third best in Hopkins program history — Kadiri owns all top-10 spots — and is No. 1 in all of Division III.
