Athletes of the Week: April 20-26

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Centennial Conference weekly awards have been announced for the week of April 20-26 in baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and outdoor track & field. This marks the final weekly honors of the 2025-26 academic year. 

See below for the full list of weekly honorees and details about each of their performances. 


BASEBALL

Player of the Week
Matt Hollender, Sr., C, Franklin & Marshall 
Short Hills, N.J. | Millburn 
Hollender led F&M at the plate this week as the Diplomats went 4-1 to wrap up the regular season. Hollender batted .667 (14-for-21) with a 1.333 slugging percentage and .731 on-base percentage. The senior had 14 hits with six doubles, two home runs, five walks, seven RBIs and 11 runs scored. Hollender became the second Diplomat in program history to have two five-hit performances in their career, with both of those games coming this week. He went 5-for-5 against Gettysburg on Tuesday, before hitting 5-for-6 in game two against Muhlenberg on Sunday. Hollender led F&M with a .453 batting average this season with 16 doubles, nine home runs and 54 RBI. The Short Hills, N.J. native ends his F&M career with the highest slugging percentage in program history at .597.

Pitcher of the Week
Sam Cohen, Sr., RHP, Haverford 
Ellicott City, Md. | Mt. Hebron
Cohen earned two wins, including a complete game shutout, across 15.0 innings last week. He allowed just 10 hits and two runs while striking out 14 batters. In a 11-3 road victory at Swarthmore on Tuesday, Cohen tossed 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while striking out four to secure the victory. He followed that performance with a career outing against Dickinson on Saturday, firing a complete-game shutout in a 9–0 win. Cohen scattered five hits, allowed just one walk, and struck out a career-high 10 batters over nine scoreless innings, marking his first career complete game and shutout. It marked just the ninth complete-game across the Centennial this season. The senior closed out the regular season leading the CC with 65 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL    

Player of the Week
Renee Laczkowski, So., INF, Gettysburg
Erie, Colo. | Erie
Laczkowski led the Bullets to a 4-1 week, hitting .647 on the week. She went 11-for-17 at the plate with three doubles and a home run for a 1.000 slugging percentage. She had four multiple-hit games on the week, including four hits in the nightcap against Muhlenberg to reach 100 hits for her career. She also scored eight runs while adding six RBIs and three walks to finish the week with a .667 on-base percentage and 1.667 OPS.

Pitcher of the Week
Ainsley McClure, Sr., RHP, Franklin & Marshall
Yardley, Pa. | Pennsbury 
McClure led F&M to a pair of complete-game wins in the circle, as the Diplomats confirmed the program's first Centennial Conference Softball Tournament appearance since 2017's championship-winning season. Across 14 frames, she totaled 12 strikeouts with a 4.50 ERA. Her best performance of the week came in the team's 5-2 win that locked a spot in the CC postseason, as she pitched all seven frames with eight strikeouts and two earned runs on seven hits and no walks.

MEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week
Reid Tietjen, Sr., A, Haverford
Mountain Lakes, N.J. | Mountain Lakes 
Tietjen closed his collegiate career in style on Saturday, powering the offense in Haverford’s 13–12 victory over rival Swarthmore—marking the Fords’ first win against the Garnet since 2018. Tietjen led the way with five points on three goals and two assists, placing all four of his shots on target. The senior finishes his career ranked sixth all-time in program history with 192 points and ninth all-time with 114 goals.

Defensive Player of the Week
Ryan Backus, So., FO, Dickinson
Fairfield, Conn. | Fairfield Prep
Backus went 10-of-16 at the face-off X with five ground balls, one goal and one caused turnover in the 17-5 conference win over Muhlenberg that clinched the No. 1 seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the Red Devils. In the eight-goal third quarter, three of his wins resulted in immediate goals for the Red and White on the ensuing possession, including one for himself.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE 

Offensive Player of the Week

Epstein posted an all-around week for Haverford, finishing with seven points on six goals and one assist, 10 draw controls, four ground balls, and one caused turnover across two key Centennial Conference victories that helped the Fords secure the No. 1 seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament for the first time in program history.In a 13–12 overtime win over Washington College, Epstein recorded two goals—including the overtime game-winner—while adding four ground balls, seven draw controls, and one caused turnover. She followed with a standout performance at Swarthmore, scoring four goals on five shots in a 17–5 win over the Garnet, while also contributing one assist and three draw controls. With the effort, she moved within three points of tying Liz Ames ’99/00 for second all-time in program history with 279 career points. 

Defensive Player of the Week
Ally Kennedy, So., M, Gettysburg
Chester Springs, Pa. | Downingtown East 
Kennedy helped the defense in a week where the Bullets posted their first shutout since 2017. In the two wins, she recorded six ground balls, four caused turnovers and eight draw controls. In the 17-0 win at McDaniel, she had two ground balls and two caused turnovers before picking up four ground balls to go with seven draw controls and two caused turnovers at Washington on Saturday.

MEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week
Dylan Hayes Gilbert, So., Swarthmore 
Wilmington, N.C. | Cape Fear Academy
Gilbert was the hero for the eighth-ranked Garnet in a 4-3 victory at seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, pulling out a three-set victory in the final match at sixth singles to give Swarthmore the win. He dropped the opening set, 2-6, but rallied to claim a 7-6 tiebreak victory and force a decisive frame. Gilbert carried the momentum into the final set and pulled away for a 6-2 triumph.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week

Reisterstown, Md. | Garrison Forest School 
Crain went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles against Franklin & Marshall and Muhlenberg last week. Against F&M, she and partner Natasha Sharnoff fell just short of a win at first doubles before she bounced back with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 victory over Natalie Untermeyer at the top singles spot. Against Muhlenberg, she teamed with Sharnoff for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles and posted a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Sydney Madlock at No. 1 singles.

Track Athlete of the Week
Connor Oiler, Sr., Johns Hopkins
Arlington Heights, Ill. | John Hersey 
At the Penn Relays, Oiler led off for the Blue Jays in the steeplechase and delivered a stellar performance, placing 17th with a personal-best time of 8:53.87. His mark rewrites the Hopkins record book, setting a new program record while also ranking fifth in Division III this season, third in Centennial Conference history and 32nd in Division III history.

Field Athlete of the Week
Archer Manning, Jr., Swarthmore
Montclair, N.J. | Greenwich
Manning made history at the Haverford Midweek Meet, besting Dick Hall's 75-year-old school record in the long jump. The junior recorded a distance of 7.02 meters to edge out the Swarthmore legend by a quarter of an inch. Manning currently holds the top long jump mark in the Centennial Conference this season.

Track Athlete of the Week

4x800 Relay, Johns Hopkins 
Ani Wedemeyer | Emma Kothari | Diana Valentini | Mackenzie Setton
Competing as the Blue Jays' lone entry on the final day at the Penn Relays, the quartet of Ani Wedemeyer, Emma Kothari, Diana Valentini and Mackenzie Setton delivered an extraordinary performance in the 4x800-meter relay. The group crossed the finish line in 8:49.79 to place third, trailing only Navy, which won the event, and Yale. Their time stands as the fastest in the nation this season and ranks second in program history as well as second all-time in Division III. The only faster performance came from last year's Johns Hopkins squad of Kothari, Setton, Harrinee Senthilkumar and Annie Huang, which set the Division III record at the 129th Penn Relays.

Field Athlete of the Week
Erika Ezumba, Sr., Johns Hopkins 
Owings Mills, Md. | Notre Dame Preparatory
Ezumba delivered the highlight of the day in the hammer throw at the Penn Relays, breaking her own Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference records. Competing primarily against Division I athletes, Ezumba captured the event title with a personal-best throw of 58.77 meters. Her mark currently stands as the top throw in Division III this season.
