Athletes of the Week: Jan. 29-Feb. 4

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The calendar has flipped to February and Centennial Conference fans know what that means - winter championship season is upon us. This marks the final week of wrestling awards heading into Saturday's championship at McDaniel, while only a few weeks remain until the basketball, swimming and indoor track & field championships commence. 

Ethan Hart of Dickinson men's track & field headlines this week's honorees with a record-breaking performance. Charlie Cross of Gettysburg men's swimming compiled his fourth weekly award of 2023-24, while Alayna Arnolie of Gettysburg women's basketball, Mia Yancey of Gettysburg women's swimming and Sean Cowan of Ursinus wrestling each secured their second weekly awards of the year.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Player of the Week

Vinny DeAngelo, Sr., G, Swarthmore 
Aston, Pa. | Sun Valley
DeAngelo averaged 20 points, while shooting 56% (14-of-25) from the field and 50% (6-of-12) from three-point range in a pair of victories over Muhlenberg and McDaniel. The senior opened the week with 19 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists in a win over the Mules. DeAngelo then dropped 21 points with three rebounds and one assist in a victory over the Green Terror.

Player of the Week
Alayna Arnolie, So., G, Gettysburg 
Vienna, Va. | James Madison
Arnolie repeated as Player of the Week after leading the Bullets to a 2-0 week that included a 78-67 win over No. 9 Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Arnolie averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in the two weeks, pouring in a career-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting against the Blue Jays. She added 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting in a 61-60 victory at Haverford on Saturday. For the week, she shot 50% from the floor and 52.9% (9-of-17) from long range. She pulled down eight rebounds, handed out seven assists and nabbed four steals.

Charlie Cross, Sr., Gettysburg 
Charlottesville, Va. | Albermarle
Cross earned Centennial weekly honors for the fourth time this winter after leading the 24th-ranked Bullets to a 194-67 victory over Ursinus in the dual finale on Saturday. He won both breaststroke events, taking the 100 with a time of 58.86 seconds before also winning the 200 in a time of 2:08.46. He capped his day with a program record time of 53.70 seconds in the 100 IM, which ranks sixth all-time in CC history.

Yancey secured weekly honors for the second time in the past three weeks following a four-win afternoon as the 19th-ranked Bullets downed Ursinus 202-55 in the dual-meet finale on Saturday. In addition to anchoring the 200 medley relay to a winning time of 1:47.27, she added individual victories in the 200 free (1:54.10) and 100 free (53.09 seconds) before capping her day with a victory and program record in the 100 IM with her time of 1:00.37, breaking her previous record by more than two seconds. Her 100 IM time ranks 23rd nationally this season.

Athlete of the Week

Sean Cowan, Fr., 174, Ursinus
Egg Harbor City, N.J. | Absegami 
Cowan earned a trio of bonus points victories for Ursinus as the Bears completed a perfect 5-0 Centennial Conference dual record. On Thursday, he opened with a 9-1 major decision over Muhlenberg's Tyson Derenberger as Ursinus defeated Muhlenberg 23-13. On Saturday at the Centennial quad meet, Cowan added an 18-1 technical fall over Gettysburg's Connor Hoefling before collecting a pinfall over McDaniel's Dalton Pearl. The Bears were trailing 17-7 at the time before Cowan's pin allowed Ursinus to get back into the match and later win in the final bout, 22-20. With the victories, he currently stands with a 30-7 overall record and a perfect 12-0 mark in dual meets this season.

Track Athlete of the Week

Trevor Richwine, So., Dickinson

Richwine raced to the 42nd fastest time in the nation in the 800 meters at the NYU DIII Invitational on Friday night at The Armory. The sophomore crossed the 800 finish line in 1:55.72, which ranks atop the CC and 42nd on the national performance list. 
 
Field Athlete of the Week
Ethan Hart, Sr., Dickinson 
New Market, Md. | Linganore 
Hart repeated as Field Athlete of the Week after breaking his own conference and school records in the shot put at the NYU DIII Invitational on Friday night. Hart registered a mark of 17.13 meters, besting his previous record of 16.97 that he established on Dec. 3, 2023.

Harrinee Senthilkumar, Jr., Johns Hopkins 
Bridgewater, N.J. | The Academy for Health and Medical Sciences 
Senthilkumar led the way at Friday's NYU Division III Invitational, winning the 800 with a time of 2:15.43. The junior's mark is the second-fastest run by a Hopkins athlete this season, second-fastest in the Centennial Conference and is the 18th-fastest in all of Division III.

Field Athlete of the Week
Erika Ezumba, So., Johns Hopkins 
Owings Mills, Md. | Notre Dame Preparatory
Ezumba set a new personal-best in the shot put at Friday's NYU Division III Invitational, finishing in second with a throw of 12.42 meters. The sophomore's mark is the second-best by a Hopkins athlete this season and ranks second in the Centennial Conference.
